Biodiversity is to be maintained in the Lake Constance region through the development and restructuring of small bodies of water. The extension of the green infrastructure is also to be encouraged. Overall, at least 60 small bodies of water will be developed and upgraded. This will result in a habitat area of around 3 hectares. Small bodies of water are important elements in maintaining and encouraging biodiversity, as habitats and stepping stone biotopes, as well as by creating a radiation effect over several kilometres. Individual bodies of water may appear to be relatively small and insignificant. However, viewed as a whole, the millions of small bodies of water worldwide represent an area of 30 per cent of all stationary inland waters. Individual bodies of water as well as small networks of bodies of water are important for protecting amphibians and for offering mammals and birds a complex mosaic of wet areas. Small bodies of water also produce a range of advantages for the ecosystem. This is important in connection with climate change. Small bodies of water once constantly originated at Lake Constance via dynamic processes. In today’s cultural landscapes this dynamic is missing, so that silted up small bodies of water have to be regularly maintained or replaced with new systems. Their appearance has also been greatly decimated due to intensive agriculture and the residential developments. There is also too little awareness of the condition and value of small bodies of water in the Lake Constance region, and their protection has been insufficiently implemented in practice. These challenges exist in all countries around Lake Constance and can only be conquered jointly. For animals and plants know no national boundaries. Awareness of the problems of small bodies of water can be raised in the countries on Lake Constance via the transnational networking of different participants from nature protection as well as joint public relations to accompany this. Acceptance of their protection can also be increased extensively over the long term. At the same time their value as part of a large habitat complex in Euregio can be conveyed, and transnational protection efforts can be better understood. Greater awareness of habitats also increases their attractiveness and the public’s interest in habitats grows. Where nothing stands in the way of this aim of protection, the number of visitors should, and therefore can, also be increased. (English)
