Industrial digitalisation leads to radical upheavals in business models and process chains, which present major challenges, especially for small and medium companies (SMEs). On the other hand, digitalisation creates enormous potential for companies, which should be considered and developed, in order to promote sustainable transformation into new business models and process chains. Companies in the Lake Constance region are faced with or already find themselves in the midst of having to overcome radical changes brought about by digitalisation. The spectrum of where companies currently stand in this respect is very wide. This ranges from traditionally producing companies (“classic” SMEs) to IT companies and other firms that help to significantly advance digitalisation innovations (“digital SMEs”). LAKE CONSTANCE MID-TIER 4.0 aims to contribute to the regional mid-tier, perceiving digitalisation not as a “risk” but as an “opportunity”, and supports small and medium companies in particular in the Lake Constance region to overcome, action and implement rapidly advancing industrial digitalisation. Due to their limited resources and high level of specialisation, SMEs scarcely have the opportunity to fully embrace and accommodate the change. The objective of the Interreg project is to coordinate, extend and combine the expertise of the partners involved and make this more usable for the regional mid-tier. Digitalisation is not a new phenomenon but takes place driven by high-tech providers, large companies that operate worldwide and scientific institutions in many areas of life. The innovative character of LAKE CONSTANCE MID-TIER 4.0 is in its effort to combine the expertise that is available around the lake, in order to integrally enable opportunities for the mid-tier and develop pragmatic solutions. The Interreg project contributes in a diverse way to supporting the Lake Constance region in terms of increasing digitalisation, along with the challenges and opportunities that this brings with it, and to make new ways available for the participating companies. It also contributes to transforming the four-country region into an intelligent, sustainable and integrative economy, which is characterised by a high level of employment and productivity as well as distinct social and territorial cohesion.
