Museums, archives and historical associations face new challenges in a constantly changing world. Nor can one simply “stand still” in the matter of history, but new ways and means have to be found, particularly in how to put it across. Museums, archives and historical associations are therefore constantly developing new methods and opportunities for imparting historical content. The presentation and communication of regional historical content online is central to the "Virtual history forum” project. The virtual history forum is to be developed as the model for the presentation of historical topics in a new and innovative form. A large online lexicon that gives examples in every respect has emerged from the virtual history forum. Content is made available to those interested beyond national borders. The tool can represent a valuable basis for museums, archives and historical associations in their work. Besides this, the content developed will form an extremely valuable basis for regional development, municipal decision-makers, tourism, educational institutions and countless other areas. New material and intangible cultural heritage will be developed for the creation of the virtual history forum. There is also a special focus on photo archives. For historical photographs enable a unique insight into cultural change. Material cultural heritage will be put together for the regions involved through targeted research in archives and libraries, as well as the development of private collections. An important foundation will be laid for future (pre-)academic work through the creation of regional biographies and targeted research in relevant newspapers and magazines. Intangible cultural heritage will be developed through comprehensive interviews with contemporary witnesses. It has been possible to develop sources that were previously inaccessible for the virtual history forum through the increased public presence of the activities carried out by the institutions involved, as well as supporting awareness-raising measures. The history of skiing is ideal for the development of an exemplary product. For Vorarlberg and the bordering Allgäu demonstrate numerous commonalities in this respect. The range of topics on “skiing and winter tourism”, which are extremely important for the regions involved in the project, are to be substantiated scientifically. The extent to which ski sport is part of the cultural heritage and has promoted social and economic development will thereby be demonstrated. The museums, archives and historical associations involved in the project will thereby make a significant contribution to increasing the joint natural, and in particular, cultural heritage. (English)
