    The food sector is one of the priority sectors across the Atlantic Area, as one of the region’s largest employers and exporters. It is a growing sector worldwide, with strong innovation potential (quality and safe products, resource and technical efficiency), and has a significant influence in preserving the natural environment and enhancing Atlantic rural economies. However, most of this food sector is composed of family owned SMEs producing for local markets that face special difficulties in accessing foreign markets, as well as mass distribution networks. The Atlantic Food Export project aims to help food sector SMEs from the Atlantic regions to develop innovative strategies and improve their competitiveness in international markets. With the aim of addressing the internationalisation of SMEs and increase of trade and exports in one of the strategic sectors within the Atlantic Area, the food sector, this project will contribute to and support the: (i) Improvement of the competitiveness and export capacities of food sector SMEs from the partner regions and the whole Atlantic Area; (ii) Promotion of business cooperation through knowledge sharing and collaboration; (iii) Creation of a business support network operating across the Atlantic Area to address the issues of scale and capacity; (iv) and of course, increase of exports of agri-food products.     O setor alimentar é um dos setores prioritários em todo o Espaço Atlântico, sendo um dos maiores empregadores e exportadores da região. Trata-se de um setor em crescimento a nível mundial, com um forte potencial de inovação (produtos seguros e de qualidade, eficiência técnica e dos recursos) e com uma influência significativa na preservação do ambiente natural e no reforço das economias rurais atlânticas. No entanto, a maior parte deste setor alimentar é composta por PME familiares que produzem para mercados locais que enfrentam dificuldades especiais no acesso a mercados estrangeiros, bem como redes de distribuição em massa. O projeto «Atlantic Food Export» visa ajudar as PME do setor alimentar das regiões atlânticas a desenvolver estratégias inovadoras e a melhorar a sua competitividade nos mercados internacionais. Com o objetivo de dar resposta à internacionalização das PME e ao aumento do comércio e das exportações num dos setores estratégicos do Espaço Atlântico, o setor alimentar, este projeto contribuirá e apoiará: i) Melhoria da competitividade e das capacidades de exportação das PME do setor alimentar das regiões parceiras e de todo o Espaço Atlântico; ii) Promoção da cooperação empresarial através da partilha de conhecimentos e da colaboração; iii) Criação de uma rede de apoio às empresas que opere em todo o Espaço Atlântico para abordar as questões de escala e capacidade; iv) e, evidentemente, o aumento das exportações de produtos agroalimentares.
