Palliative care is still relatively new to respective national health systems, particularly in low and middle-income countries like Croatia (CRO), Montenegro (MNE) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (BIH). In order to develop palliative care services, existing barriers have to be overcome. Significant barriers exist in the lack of services and institutions for palliative care, lack of clear policies establishing palliative care, lack of educational programmes on palliative care as well as palliative care services in the region. All these barriers lead to unnecessary suffering for the people who are among the most vulnerable in society. Another crucial problem is the aging of the population in general and a high percentage of people over 60 years that are main potential users of palliative care. Main target groups that will benefit from the project are: patients with terminal illness, doctors and nurses, social workers, family members of patients, etc. All of them will benefit from new knowledge gathered and services developed within the scope of the project. By purchasing new medical equipment, organizing and conducting educational workshops, implementing national/international quality standards, exchanging experiences with institution in other countries and other activities, project will significantly improve palliative care service in the region. Project outputs are: E-platform with Virtual Doctor – jointly developed tool that will improve palliative care service; Educational workshops about palliative care; Specialized trainings for use of new medical equipment; Improved palliative care service for patients.
