RECENT AND UNEXPECTED OUTBREAKS OF DIFFERENT VIRUSES AROUND THE WORLD ILLUSTRATE THE NEED TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THE MECHANISMS BY WHICH VIRUSES CHANGE THEIR HOST RANGE AND/OR THEIR PATHOGENICITY. IT IS ALSO NECESSARY TO DEVELOP NEW METHODS TO COMBAT VIRIC INFECTIONS. OUR GROUP AND OTHER RESEARCH GROUPS HAVE DETECTED A NUMBER OF MOLECULAR DIFFERENCES BETWEEN FUSOGENICAL AND NON-FUSOGENICAL REOVIRUSES. THESE TWO GROUPS OF REOVIRUSES ARE EXTREMELY SIMILAR IN THEIR REPLICATION STRUCTURES AND CYCLES, BUT VERY DIFFERENT IN THEIR PATHOGENIC CAPACITY. THUS, WHILE NON-FUSOGENICOS VIRUSES ARE UBIQUITOUS VIRUSES THAT ARE NOT DIRECTLY ASSOCIATED WITH DISEASES, MOST (IF NOT ALL) REOVIRUSES ARE IMPORTANT PATHOGENS OF BIRDS, MAMMALS AND REPTILES.
