    Το αρχαίο θέατρο Μεγαλόπολης –με βάση τη διάμετρο της ορχήστρας – είναι, όπως αναφέρεται και στις ιστορικές πηγές, το μεγαλύτερο στον ελλαδικό χώρο, ενώ η αρχαιολογική έρευνα το κατατάσσει στα πρώτα μνημεία του είδους, όπου εφαρμόστηκε το αρχιτεκτονικό σχέδιο με κυκλικής κάτοψης κοίλο και ορχήστρας. Σήμερα διατηρούνται οι κατώτερες σειρές της πρώτης από τις συνολικά τρεις ζώνες εδωλίων, αλλά το μεγαλύτερο τμήμα του αυθεντικού αρχαίου οικοδομικού υλικού σώζεται κατά χώρα, ιδιαιτέρως στις κερκίδες Β και Γ, οι οποίες και επιλέχθηκαν με βάση το κριτήριο αυτό για τη φάση Α΄ αποκατάστασης του μνημείου.Με γνώμονα τη διατήρηση της αυθεντικότητας του μνημείου και την αναστρεψιμότητα των προβλεπόμενων επεμβάσεων σε αυτό, σκοπός είναι η διάσωση του μνημείου – όχι η επαναφορά του μνημείου στην αρχική του μορφή -, η ανάσχεση της περαιτέρω φθοράς του, η στατική του αποκατάσταση σύμφωνα με τις διεθνείς προδιαγραφές για την αποκατάσταση μνημείων, εντάσσοντας πρωτίστως το διάσπαρτο υλικό και την προσθήκη νέου υλικού – όπου είναι απολύτως απαραίτητο για δομικούς κυρίως λόγους -, η απόδοσή του στο κοινό και η λειτουργική αξιοποίησή του.Το προτεινόμενο έργο θα λειτουργήσει ως πιλοτικό, με προοπτική σε μελλοντικό χρηματοδοτικό πρόγραμμα οι εργασίες συντήρησης, στερέωσης και αποκατάστασης να επεκταθούν και σε άλλα τμήματα του κοίλου του θεάτρου. Επειδή στο χώρο του θεάτρου υπάρχουν ήδη εργοταξιακές υποδομές συντήρησης αρχιτεκτονικών καταλοίπων – εν είδη υπαιθρίου εργαστηρίου – λόγω εργασιών συντήρησης στο μνημείο μέσω διαφόρων προγραμμάτων από τη δεκαετία του 2000 κι εξής, οι επισκέπτες του αρχαιολογικού χώρου θα έχουν την ευκαιρία να παρακολουθούν δια ζώσης τη συντήρηση του μνημείου κατά τη διάρκεια υλοποίησης του έργου. Θα αντιμετωπισθεί το πρόβλημα των ομβρίων υδάτων στο χώρο του κοίλου του θεάτρου, με την κατασκευή κατάλληλου αγωγού παροχέτευσής τους εκτός του χώρου του αρχαίου θεάτρου. Θα δημιουργηθεί διάδρομος πρόσβασης από την είσοδο του αρχαιολογικού χώρου έως τις θέσεις των θεατών, κατάλληλος για την κυκλοφορία ηλεκτρικού αμαξιδίου που θα μεταφέρει ΑΜεΑ, επειδή η τωρινή διαδρομή εξασφαλίζει μερικώς και υπό προϋποθέσεις την πρόσβαση ΑΜεΑ μόνο έως το χώρο της ορχήστρας.
