Lake Maggiore and the Ticino River are bodies of water shared between Italy and Switzerland, of significant environmental interest, with the presence of numerous protected areas; they also constitute an important water resource for drinking water, irrigation and hydroelectric energy production, as well as exercising a strong tourist attraction. The cross-border nature and often conflicting needs of different users make the shared management of this resource very complex, but of considerable importance. This project wants to make a concrete contribution to the definition of achievable, sustainable, shared and exportable environmental management strategies in similar contexts of the EUSALP area. The object of the project will therefore be the management of the lake levels and the quality of the surrounding environment, with particular reference to the protected natural areas, even on the Ticino river downstream of the lake. The project will bring, as the main change, the definition of shared tools for a sustainable management that reduces conflicts of use, with a concrete positive effect on users, on biodiversity and the health of the ecosystems involved.
