BACKGROUND: Currently, city transport and long-distance passenger transport operators generally have to use more than one ticketing system to cover both distances, with very few solutions offering integrated ticketing for both types of fares. What is more, the solutions that are currently available on the market target large passenger transport operators - these solutions usually come with pre-integrated software, they are very complicated and expensive, making them unaffordable and impractical for small operators and local municipalities. Turnit from Estonia and BMS from Latvia are seeking to exploit this market gap, developing a ticket management solution that will be offered to smaller city transport and long-distance operators. The solution will be integrated so that the back-end system is the same, but the front-end system can be modified according to the needs of both city transport and long distance bus operators, thereby eliminating the previous need for separate ticketing. CROSS-BORDER NATURE: The project proceeds from a mutually perceived market gap that the Estonian and Latvian partner seek to exploit. Turnit has already developed an online sales platform before and has a unique software, but currently, they have no hardware (e.g. validator devices and travel terminals) to combine it with. BMS, in turn, has gathered extensive experience with hardware integration through their numerous e-payment and public transport projects. This leads to a unique opportunity to combine the partners’ current development obstacles and existing skills to introduce a new integrated ticketing solution on the market, complete with customized validators that suit both partners’ needs. The new product would be completely new in Latvia, while Estonia would be offered a city transport ticketing solution in addition to the long-distance solution that Turnit has already commercialized. An additional bonus in offering the solution on the market is the integration aspect - it will be a complete ticketing system tailored to the needs of the transport operator while enabling a better user experience as well as lower implementation restrictions and prices. OBJECTIVES: The objective of the project is to develop an integrated ticket management solution that will be offered as an all-inclusive package of software and hardware to transport operators offering inter-city and long distance fares. These passenger transport operators will especially benefit from the integrated solution as they would be able to cater for both segments through the same back-end system. An important part of the project is to ensure that the new joint solution would be compliant with the latest fiscalization laws that need special attention in Latvia and a number of other potential target markets. Also, the aim is to carry out various communication and marketing activities so that the solution will gain traction in Estonia and Latvia, enabling to extend the offer to new markets, starting from Lithuania and Scandinavia. MAIN ACTIVITIES: The main activities of the project include: the development of a cloud-based back-end system for sales, distribution and reporting; the development of a B2C and B2B front-end system in the form of a web shop and a mobile app; the creation of an Android-based on-board sales and check-in terminal, radio frequency identification validator and inspection device; the integration of all the technical components into a unified system via cloud services; the development of an identity package for the new product for awareness-raising and marketing purposes; the participation of the project team at various industry-specific trade fairs and conferences to demonstrate the new product and secure the first clients.
