In the EUREGIO area a better use of biomass for renewable energy is a priority. At the end of 2014 the first standalone pyrolysis plant in Europe will be operational in this area. Pyrolysis is a technique to extract oil from biomass. Pyrolysis oil can be used as a fuel and as a raw material for bio-based materials. This project is a collaboration of two universities (The Saxion University in the Netherlands and the Fachhochschule Munster in Germany) and various SME’s from the Netherlands and Germany. They work together on several innovations for producing pyrolysis oils and high-value chemicals from low-grade biomass residues - such as residues from digestion and residues from agriculture and forestry - via pyrolysis and fractionation. The ultimate goal of the project is twofold: - The development of pyrolysis as an application for low-value biomass such as residues from digestion and residues from agriculture and forestry - The use of pyrolysis oil for energy purposes and upgrading to high-value chemicals Pyrolysis is a robust process, which is in principle well suited to unlock valuable feedstocks from low-grade biomass that can be used as building blocks for biobased materials. The knowledge gained in the project will eventually be used to develop applications where pyrolysis oil or fractions thereof be used as raw material for chemicals. Activities in the project will be performed with the biomass square Saarbeck (D) in mind, because of the availability of large quantities of biomass residues and a good infrastructure. (English)
