Challenge. The project targets EMR manufacturing SMEs (typically 10 up to 250 FTE) within different (regional) subsectors (metalworking, agrifood, machine construction, …). The shift from mass production to the production of complex customized products with high added-value in very small batches, forces EMR manufacturing SMEs to transform their production. Recent studies show that focusing on ultra-short production leadtimes allows manufacturing SMEs to become more competitive, even in high-wage regions. However, shifting from traditional mass production to a leadtime reduction-based production is not that easy for most EMR manufacturing SMEs. Opportunity. Recent developments within the fields of human-centered process innovation (Quick Response Manufacturing) and innovative digital technologies (Industry. 4.0), allow to innovate production systems such that ultra-short production leadtimes can be obtained. But how to start? Goal. The goal of the project is to make EMR manufacturing SMEs more competitive by stimulating, coaching and supporting them to implement human-centered process innovation and innovative digital technologies (QRM. 4.0) on their shopfloor to drastically reduce their production leadtimes. Activities and outputs. A stepwise approach - focusing on hands-on actions by the SMEs - is used:Informing and inspiring: knowledge on the use of QRM (how to form selfsteering teams, involve operators in the production innovation process) and innovative digital technologies (connecting production machines, extracting and visualizing production data in a dashboard) to reduce the production leadtime, is transferred from the research partners to the SMEs. Practical technology sheets, inspiring testimonials, company visits to innovation leaders, practical demonstrators and hands-on workshops are organized. Within the project, 200 unique manufacturing SMEs will acquire knowledge and be inspired to take actions.Training, coaching and support: manufacturing SMEs that want to innovate/digitize their production, can start an individual use case (target: 15) and get training, coaching and support during the implementation process. A voucher scheme allows manufacturing SMEs to collaborate with IT providers and introduce innovative digital technologies in their production system (grants for 15 IT solution providers).Exchanging best-practices: a learning network on leadtime reduction will be started for manufacturing SMEs and IT solution providers to share their experiences, learn from one another and evaluate opportunities to professionally collaborate. Results and transregional collaboration. Intensive transregional cooperation is required for this purpose:Transferring R&D; results between the regions. The project combines technology with human-centered organizational optimization. Knowledge on those topics is dispersed within the EMR region. The project allows to exchange specific, complementary, knowledge between the regions to the benefit of the EMR manufacturing SMEs.Access to state-of-the-art fieldlabs: the project combines three complementary fieldlabs with state-of-the-art equipment. Practical demonstrators will be developed and demonstrated in those labs to make the potential of human-centered production and digital technologies for leadtime reduction more tangible for the SMEs.Matching innovation leaders with innovation followers: within the EMR region, there are both manufacturing innovation leaders that have applied QRM principles and digital technologies and innovation followers that need to take their first steps. Bringing together manufacturing SMEs with a different maturity level (but all focusing on leadtime reduction) stimulates learning from one another and allows to exchange expertise, increasing the overall innovation level.Exchanging best practices between manufacturing subsectors: each region focusses on a specific subsector of manufacturing. Bringing together manufacturing SMEs from different subsectors, creates a spill-over of experience and best practices, generating new insights and ideas. The project will result in a more competitive manufacturing industry in the EMR.
