Background: Nature based tourism has become more popular during last decades, including garden tourism that combines a popular hobby, love of being in nature and pleasure from aesthetic experiences. Nevertheless, the potential of garden tourism has been only moderately used till today in the programme area, thus it is a right time to join forces, use the momentum and give a strong push to the development of garden tourism in Estonia and Latvia. As Latvian and Estonian national tourism development organizations have not yet specifically identified garden tourism as one of the priorities in their development plans, the project has potential for making a real difference both in Latvia and Estonia. Cross-border nature: By combining attractive gardens and parks of Estonia and Latvia into one joint cross-border tourism product, we expand and diversify the garden tourism offer, improve the experience and harmonise the approach to garden tourism in our regions. As we are only making the first steps towards joint promotion of garden tourism, it is of great value to have harmonised and clearly understandable criteria set for our service providers. Joint product development allows to use the best practices of both countries, and the cooperation between garden owners allows to ensure more diversified and professional development of our gardens and cross-marketing between them. Joint branding, promotion and marketing allows project partners and members of the Garden Pearls to target larger visitor groups and be more efficient with marketing actions in different target markets. Last, but not least, by acting jointly we will be able to be more resource efficient. Less funds will be spent for product and service development and marketing compared to doing it separately. Objective(s): The objective of the project is to diversify the garden tourism offer in Estonia and Latvia by creating an attractive and sustainable garden tourism product and service Garden Pearls. The Garden Pearls will be used for designing various joint garden tourism routes and other services for garden tourists. Sub-objectives of the project are as follows: 1) Obtain a full overview of professionally maintained gardens and parks that enables to set principles for product and service design and create solid identity and concept for the routes. 2) Equalise the quality and attractiveness of Garden Pearls’ sites by carrying out small-scale investments in parks and gardens (minor improvements in parks and gardens to be fully functional and visitor friendly sites). 3) Increase visibility of our natural heritage by joint branding and promotion of the gardens and parks as Garden Pearls. 4) Increase the knowledge about importance of special interest tourism (e.g. garden tourism) and possibilities of increasing visitor numbers. 5) Prolong the tourism season in destinations, since garden related activities often take place in spring and autumn. Main activities: The main activities of the project include: 1) product development and service design; 2) capacity building of the owners and managers of parks and gardens that belong to the Garden Pearls (44 parks and gardens at the time of submitting the application);< 3) marketing and promotion of the Garden Pearls; 4) small-scale investments in gardens and parks to make them more attractive and improve the visitor’s experience.
