Overall objective of the project is to contribute to increase of cross-border cooperation among authorities of the Lithuanian-Belorussian border area dealing with natural and man-made disasters Project is aiming to solve problems common to both partnering districts - Trakai and Lida. Both are facing same problems in the sphere of water supply and waste water management: - waste of natural resources, pollution, and contamination of ground waters caused by ‘man-made’ activity (e. g.spilling highly hazardous sewage) and accidents (e.g. cracks, blasts) in poorly built water supply and waste water management systems; - natural disasters due to heavy rains, cold and thaws on spring, when streets and roads are flooded, rivers and lakes are polluted, major losses are incurred due to damaged infrastructure and equipment. Partnership involves: 1. Trakai district municipality administration; 2. JSC "Trakai waters"; 3. Lida municipal unitary enterprise of housing and communal services Main activities: - Enhancing capacity of responsible institutions to tackle common environmental and resource management issues - Improvement of environmental policy on water supply and wastewater management - Program for society's education on environmental protection Expected results: 1. Reduced number of environmental disasters caused by accidents in wastewater management systems 2. Reduced waste of natural resources caused by accidents in water-supply systems 3. Improved environment policy management due to cooperation among authorities in Trakai and Lida districts 4. Improved public awareness of environmental management responsibilities (English)
