Inaugurated on 9 March 2012, the German-French Water Protection Police Station of Strasbourg and Kehl has to carry out the task of supervising commercial and recreational navigation on the Rhine (according to the Mannheim Convention on the Navigation of the Rhine of 1868, which describes the free circulation and international status of the river). Within this unit 26 French gendarmes and 29 members of the Baden-Württenberg Water Protection Police serve. As part of its tasks, this unit wants to acquire a new and more effective sonar device. This device enables search procedures in the Rhine as part of investigations, rapid intervention in accidents and the prevention of hazards in ports and on the waterway. This purchase would also lead to an extension of police cooperation along the Upper Rhine, including with police from Rhineland-Palatinate, the Swiss cantons of Basel-Stadt, Basel-Landschaft and Aargau, who could also need such a rare and effective device from time to time.
