Interreg Flanders-Netherlands has consented to a contribution of 1.4 million euros for the Groot-Saeftinghe Border Park, an ambitious project by the Flemish and Dutch governments benefiting nature in and around the unique nature reserve of The Sunken City of Saeftinghe. In the Flemish-Dutch long-term vision for the Scheldt estuary, the Flemish and Dutch governments earlier agreed that the deepening of the Western Scheldt and the nature compensation in the Hedwige and Prosper polders should go hand in hand with further optimisation of cross-border nature conservation. This is currently being done by means of the biodiversity measures in the European Interreg Groot-Saeftinghe Border Park project. It is a concrete cross-border project that not only fits in perfectly with Interreg Flanders-Netherlands' objectives, but also offers the opportunity of a joint approach, as the project area is located geographically on the border and therefore necessitates Flemish-Dutch collaboration. With the nature development in the Hedwige Polder, Prosper Polders, Doel Polder and the Nieuwe Arenberg Polder bordering on The Sunken City of Saeftinghe, an enormous, continuous estuarine nature reserve is being created, a true cross-border nature park. The project focuses on three activities: the recovery of bird biodiversity, optimisation of the estuarine nature and the eco-hydrologic recovery of the areas inside the dikes. To achieve these objectives, breeding islands, a fish passage, a tower, a bunker and boxes for bats and numerous other large and small landscape elements are being created. All based on a joint Flemish-Dutch vision for nature conservation. (English)
