Industrial waste waters are a considerable challenge for municipal waste water treatment plants as they require special treatment and management. In this project, local water utilities, waste water treatment plants, industrial companies and permitting authorities elaborate and test guidelines and procedures for a more efficient management of industrial sewage. Problem to be solved: BEST wants to improve the treatment of industrial waste waters. Waste water treatment plants are major point sources of nutrients and hazardous substances entering local waters and the Baltic Sea. The treatment process covers a long sequence of steps easily disturbed if waste waters of abnormal content or amount are discharged to the system without control. Such situations may occur especially concerning industrial waste waters, and cause capacity problems, disturbance of biological treatment processes and pollution of waste water sludge which all lead to increased pollution to the Baltic Sea. Actions: BEST develops more efficient management and co-operation methods among waste water treatment plants, industries and municipalities in order to improve the control of the treatment process. BEST also pilots technical pretreatment solutions that dampen peaks in the industrial waste water discharge to the plant and thus improve treatment. The project further organizes trainings and facilitates exchange of good practices in order to ensure and stress joint learning and transnational cooperation. (English)
