The aim of the project “Reconstruction of Luxury Water Sites and Construction of Water Improvement Plants” is to improve the quality of drinking water supplied to consumers. Currently, drinking water is supplied to residents of Šiauliai city and suburb settlements from 3 water sites — Birute (about 56 %), Bubiai (about 34 %) and lepši (about 10 %). Lithuanian Hygiene Standard HN 24:2003 ‘Drinking water safety and quality requirements’ (hereinafter referred to as ‘the Hygiene Standard’) meets the quality requirements only for water supplied from the Birute water area. The water supplied from the Bubei water site exceeds the rate of sulphates in the water, and the lowest quality water reaches consumers from a lepsy water site which does not meet the hygiene standard according to 2 parameters, i.e. the total iron content in the water exceeds 2.9 times and the ammonium content up to 1.24 times. The reconstruction of the lepsy water site and the construction of water remediation facilities would ensure quality requirements for drinking water supplied from the water site, which would make it possible to increase the amount of drinking water supplied to the centralised networks from this water area to 40 % of the total drinking water demand by reducing accordingly the amount of water supplied from the Bobby water site which does not comply with the Hygiene Standards. In this way, water complying with Hygiene norms would reach about 40 per cent more residents of Šiauliai city and suburban settlements after the implementation of the project. (English)

(Lithuanian)
