The preliminary study project on reducing the carbon footprint of the mining industry in the Arctic region has a significant role in the Finnish economy and their impact on the economy of the province of Lapland is significant. The new mining projects under way show great growth and development in the sector. The development and strengthening of the mining industry makes the environment of Lapland and the sustainable use of natural resources a topical issue. The preliminary study aims to explore ways to change the energy needs of the mining industry in a more environmentally sustainable direction. One of the objectives of the Preliminary Study is to explore possibilities to reduce the carbon footprint of the mining industry and related sub-activities. Increasing and developing low-carbon and energy-efficient methods supports the sustainable use of natural resources and the development of these operating models in our region is particularly important. The study will be carried out in conjunction with a wide-ranging cooperation network. The network includes representatives of mining companies, other operators in the mining industry, educational institutions and municipalities. The exploratory project will also include information to raise awareness among the population of the region about the environmental responsibility and activities of the mining industry. Raising awareness strengthens the acceptance of the mining industry (social sustainability), increases the potential for reconciling the various industries in the region (equality) and reduces the occupational gap between men and women (gender equality). The preliminary study results, for example, in a report on ways to increase the low carbon content of the mining industry. This will also result in a multidisciplinary cooperation network. (English)

Arktisen alueen kaivosteollisuuden hiilijalanjäljen pienentäminen -esiselvityshankeKaivosteollisuuden rooli suomalaisessa elinkeinoelämässä on merkittävä ja niiden vaikutukset Lapin maakunnan elinkeinoelämään ovat huomattavia. Käynnissä olevat uudet kaivoshankkeet osoittavat alalle suurta kasvua ja kehitystä. Kaivosteollisuuden kehittyminen ja voimistuminen nostaa ajankohtaiseksi asiaksi Lapin ympäristön ja luonnonvarojen kestävän käytön. Esiselvityksessä on tarkoituksena selvittää keinoja muuttaa kaivosteollisuuden energian tarvetta ekologisesti kestävämpään suuntaan. Esiselvityksen tuloksena on mm. raportti kaivosteollisuuden vähähiilisyyden lisäämisen keinoista. Tämän lisäksi tuloksena on monialainen yhteistyöverkosto. (Finnish)
