The ambulance emergency service is a very valuable service that is provided to injured or medically ill patients to take them to medical centers. Due to the urgency of this transport, ambulance accidents are a significant risk to the transport technicians of patients and paramedics and even to the patients they are carrying. Within this risk it is detected that passengers at the rear of these vehicles, suffer from a safety deficiency with regard to the safety of passengers at the front._x000D_ To date, there have been initiatives worldwide to improve the safety of the rear of the ambulance, however, these are costly systems requiring changes in the vehicle, which leads to a limitation on their use. Today, the most common restraint system for rear seats is simply a 2 or 3 point belt with no initial or limited load pretensioner. On the other hand, there are no airbags for individual rear seats on the market and furthermore, the safety of the occupants of ambulance vehicles has not yet been addressed by the automotive safety paradigm, particularly for the patient’s rear compartment. The overall objective of the proposed project is the functional development of a novel occupant restraint system in rear seats for special purpose vehicles that improves the protection offered by the current system based solely on a seat belt. The new restraint system shall consist of an advanced seat belt (stress or stress limiter), an integrated airbag module in the seat and a system for checking and activating the new added system, taking as input the impact detection signal provided by the base vehicle.
