IT IS A WELL-KNOWN FACT THAT PLASTIC WASTE EXTENDS OVER THE SURFACE OF ALL OCEANS, ON BEACHES AROUND THE WORLD AND ON THE SEABED FROM THE TROPICS TO THE POLES; WE ALSO KNOW EXAMPLES OF PLASTIC INTAKE BY MANY MARINE ORGANISMS. HOWEVER, WE DO NOT KNOW HOW PLASTIC CIRCULATES AND ACCUMULATES IN SEAS AND OCEANS. WITH THE EXCEPTION OF SMALL FLOATING WASTE, WE IGNORE WHAT THE PLASTIC LOAD IS FOR THE VARIOUS MARINE RESERVOIRS, HOW THESE WASTES ARE TRANSFERRED BETWEEN RESERVOIRS, OR SIMPLY THAT PLASTIC CONCENTRATIONS ARE MODERATE OR EXTREME FOR EACH ECOSYSTEM. THE AIM OF THE MIDAS PROJECT IS TO MAKE AN INTEGRAL MASS BALANCE FOR PLASTIC LITTER THROUGHOUT THE MEDITERRANEAN BASIN, CONSIDERING THE LAND ENTRANCES AND MARITIMAS AND ALL PLASTIC RESERVOIRS (COSTS, COASTAL AND OFFSHORE SURFACE WATERS, SHALLOW AND DEEP BOTTOMS, WATER COLUMN AND BIOTA). THE MEDITERRANEAN IS AN IDEAL REGION TO UNDERTAKE THIS OBJECTIVE SINCE (I) IS A SEMI-CLOSED SYSTEM (WITH EXCHANGES LIMITED TO THE STRAIT OF GIBRALTAR) (II) IS ONE OF THE LARGEST REGIONS OF ACCUMULATION OF PLASTIC WASTE ON THE PLANET, (III) IS A HOT SPOT (HOT-SPOT) OF MARINE DIVERSITY ON A GLOBAL LEVEL, AND (IV) ONE OF THE REGIONS OF THE WORLD WITH THE HIGHEST CONCENTRATION OF STUDIES AND CLEANING ACTIONS ON MARINE POLLUTION. MIDAS IS SUPPORTED BY THE NUMEROUS RESEARCH PROJECTS AND CLEANING CAMPAIGNS CURRENTLY UNDER WAY OR COMPLETED IN THE MEDITERRANEAN BY THE DIFFERENT PARTNERS OF THE PROJECT, INCLUDING UNIVERSITIES AND RESEARCH INSTITUTES IN VARIOUS MEDITERRANEAN COUNTRIES (SPAIN, ITALY, FRANCE, ISRAEL, MALTA, GREECE AND MOROCCO), ENVIRONMENTAL NGOS (SURFRIDER FOUNDATION, LET¿S DO IT, PROJECT AWARE-DIVE AGAINST DEBRIS), FISHERMEN’S COFRADIAS, DIVING CLUBS OR SCHOOLS. EMPHASIS WILL BE PLACED ON TRANS-ECOSISTEMICAL STANDARDISATION OF DATA AND SAMPLING PROTOCOLS AS WELL AS ON COMPLETING THE GAPS IN AVAILABLE INFORMATION IN ORDER TO COLLECT SUFFICIENT DATA TO PRODUCE THE FIRST COMPREHENSIVE AND LARGE-SCALE EVALUATION OF MARINE PLASTIC POLLUTION. THE RESULTS WILL DETERMINE WHERE AND AT WHAT RATE PLASTIC WASTE ACCUMULATES AT SEA. IN ADDITION TO THE CLOSE RELATIONSHIP WITH SOCIETY, DIRECT PARTICIPATION IN THE PROJECT, THE RESULTS DISSEMINATION PLAN INVOLVES ADMINISTRATIVE AND ADVISORY BODIES AS WELL AS THE PLASTIC BUSINESS SECTOR. THUS, PUBLIC ADMINISTRATIONS IN CHARGE OF COASTAL MANAGEMENT SUCH AS THE MINISTRY OF ENVIRONMENT OF THE JUNTA DE ANDALUCIA OR THE MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE, FOOD AND ENVIRONMENT HAVE SHOWN THEIR INTEREST IN THE PROJECT. LARGE COMPANIES RELATED TO PLASTIC RECYCLING AND PRODUCTION IN SPAIN SUCH AS ECOEMBES AND PLASTIC EUROPE HAVE ALSO OFFICIALLY EXPRESSED THEIR SUPPORT AND INTEREST IN MONITORING PROJECT RESULTS. THEREFORE, WE HOPE THAT MIDAS WILL CONTRIBUTE SIGNIFICANTLY TO THE MANAGEMENT (MONITORING, MITIGATION AND PREVENTION) OF MARINE POLLUTION BY PLASTICS. (English) | |||||||||||||||

ES UN HECHO CONOCIDO QUE LOS RESIDUOS PLASTICOS SE EXTIENDEN POR LA SUPERFICIE DE TODOS LOS OCEANOS, EN PLAYAS DE TODO EL MUNDO Y EN FONDOS MARINOS DESDE LOS TROPICOS A LOS POLOS; TAMBIEN CONOCEMOS EJEMPLOS DE INGESTION DE PLASTICO POR PARTE DE MUCHOS ORGANISMOS MARINOS. SIN EMBARGO, DESCONOCEMOS COMO CIRCULA Y SE ACUMULA EL PLASTICO EN MARES Y OCEANOS. A EXCEPCION DE LOS RESIDUOS FLOTANTES PEQUEÑOS, IGNORAMOS CUAL ES LA CARGA DE PLASTICO PARA LOS DISTINTOS RESERVORIOS MARINOS, COMO SE TRANSFIEREN ESTOS RESIDUOS ENTRE RESERVORIOS, O SIMPLEMENTE QUE CONCENTRACIONES DE PLASTICO SON MODERADAS O EXTREMAS PARA CADA ECOSISTEMA. EL OBJETIVO DEL PROYECTO MIDAS ES REALIZAR UN BALANCE DE MASAS INTEGRAL PARA LA BASURA PLASTICA EN TODA LA CUENCA MEDITERRANEA, CONSIDERANDO LAS ENTRADAS TERRESTRES Y MARITIMAS Y TODOS LOS RESERVORIOS DE PLASTICO (COSTAS, AGUAS SUPERFICIALES COSTERAS Y OFFSHORE, FONDOS SOMEROS Y PROFUNDOS, COLUMNA DE AGUA Y BIOTA). EL MEDITERRANEO ES UNA REGION IDONEA PARA ACOMETER ESTE OBJETIVO YA QUE (I) ES UN SISTEMA SEMI-CERRADO (CON INTERCAMBIOS LIMITADOS AL ESTRECHO DE GIBRALTAR) (II) ES UNA DE LAS MAYORES REGIONES DE ACUMULACION DE RESIDUOS PLASTICOS DEL PLANETA, (III) ES UN PUNTO CALIENTE (HOT-SPOT) DE DIVERSIDAD MARINA A NIVEL GLOBAL, Y (IV) UNA DE LAS REGIONES DEL MUNDO CON MAYOR CONCENTRACION DE ESTUDIOS Y ACTUACIONES DE LIMPIEZA SOBRE LA CONTAMINACION MARINA. MIDAS SE APOYA EN LOS NUMEROSOS PROYECTOS DE INVESTIGACION Y CAMPAÑAS DE LIMPIEZA EN CURSO O COMPLETADAS EN EL MEDITERRANEO POR PARTE DE LOS DIFERENTES COLABORADORES DEL PROYECTO, INCLUYENDO UNIVERSIDADES E INSTITUTOS DE INVESTIGACION EN DIVERSOS PAISES DEL MEDITERRANEO (ESPAÑA, ITALIA, FRANCIA, ISRAEL, MALTA, GRECIA Y MARRUECOS), ONGS AMBIENTALES (SURFRIDER FOUNDATION, LET¿S DO IT, PROJECT AWARE-DIVE AGAINST DEBRIS), COFRADIAS DE PESCADORES, CLUBES DE BUCEO O CENTROS ESCOLARES. SE PONDRA ENFASIS EN LA ESTANDARIZACION TRANS-ECOSISTEMICA DE DATOS Y PROTOCOLOS DE MUESTREO ASI COMO EN COMPLETAR LAS CARENCIAS DE LA INFORMACION DISPONIBLE CON OBJETO DE REUNIR DATOS SUFICIENTES PARA ELABORAR LA PRIMERA EVALUACION INTEGRAL Y A GRAN ESCALA DE LA CONTAMINACION MARINA POR PLASTICOS. LOS RESULTADOS DETERMINARAN DONDE Y A QUE RITMO SE ACUMULAN LOS RESIDUOS PLASTICOS EN EL MAR. ADEMAS DE LA ESTRECHA RELACION CON LA SOCIEDAD, PARTICIPES DIRECTOS DEL PROYECTO, EL PLAN DE DIFUSION DE RESULTADOS INVOLUCRA A ORGANOS ADMINISTRATIVOS Y CONSULTIVOS ASI COMO AL SECTOR EMPRESARIAL DEL PLASTICO. ASI, ADMINISTRACIONES PUBLICAS ENCARGADAS DE LA GESTION DEL LITORAL COMO LA CONSEJERIA DE MEDIO AMBIENTE DE LA JUNTA DE ANDALUCIA O EL MINISTERIO DE AGRICULTURA, ALIMENTACION Y MEDIO AMBIENTE HAN MOSTRADO SU INTERES EN EL PROYECTO. LAS GRANDES EMPRESAS RELACIONADAS CON EL RECICLADO Y PRODUCCION DEL PLASTICO EN ESPAÑA COMO ECOEMBES Y PLASTIC EUROPE TAMBIEN HAN MANIFESTADO OFICIALMENTE SU APOYO Y SU INTERES EN EL SEGUIMIENTO DE RESULTADOS DEL PROYECTO. POR TANTO, ESPERAMOS QUE MIDAS CONTRIBUYA DE FORMA IMPORTANTE A LA GESTION (SEGUIMIENTO, MITIGACION Y PREVENCION) DE LA CONTAMINACION MARINA POR PLASTICOS. (Spanish)
