The Greek aluminium sector is the most important non-ferrous metal industry in our country, ranging from bauxite mining to internationally certified finished products. The recycling of aluminium plays an important role in the development of the sector today, contributing significantly to the value chain of Aluminium, one of the pillars of the metal sector in the country and specifically in the Region of Central Greece. In the context of environmental management and continuous care for the improvement of the environmental footprint, the Aluminium sector has now turned to recycling aluminium and its products. In this way it contributes drastically to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and to saving natural resources, which are among the European Union’s top priorities. Today, the main problem in the recycling of aluminium and aluminium waste products (Scrap) is the heterogeneity of the chemical composition and the presence of undesirable compounds, impurities, which negatively affect the properties of finished products. As far as the natural object is concerned, the proposed DeReAl project aims to develop a methodology for testing and evaluating the effect of adding aluminium products that have been completed (scrap), in the primary, for the production of quality recycled aluminium products, focusing on rolling products, ensuring that their final properties are not degraded in the first stage of the production process. The use of recycled aluminium is so far based on empirical techniques, whereby the determination of the percentage and quality of recycled aluminium in relation to the primary is carried out using test and error methodologies. Unlike these methodologies, the DeReAl programme proposes to implement an integrated and systematic methodology combining chemical analyses on solid scrap and melt with metalographic analyses and mechanical properties of plates to determine criteria for selecting the percentage and type of recycled aluminium for the casting of each alloy. The methodology of DeReAl will allow optimisation of the use of recycled aluminium, so that it becomes more efficient, with positive consequences for both the partners and the region of Central Greece. This project will be implemented through a partnership of Mytilineos SA Group of enterprises and the COMPANY COMPANY OF INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH, TECNOLOGICAL AND WORKING. Mytilineos S.A. Group of enterprises and specifically the factory complex of ALUMINIUM OF GREECE, established as one of the strongest representatives of the aluminium sector in the European Union, aims to expand and upgrade its products by exploiting aluminium waste (scrap), covering on the one hand customer needs, on the other hand enhancing its competitiveness, with multiplier benefits for the Greek economy and society. Within the framework of the project, EBETAM will utilise its long-standing experience in providing research services and quality control to the Greek industry. The expected results will contribute to the establishment of EBETAM as a company specialised in the primary aluminium industry outside the narrow framework of Greek industrial reality. The main role in this will be the know-how to prescribe and optimise the critical parameters for the production of recycled aluminium products in accordance with the required specifications of the processes following their subsequent treatments up to the final product stage.
