The Danish-German border region is a pioneer when it comes to developing and distributing energy efficient energy solutions for the modern society. These solutions call for new technologies since limited resources in a globalized world require a radical mind shift in energy production and consumption. Devices made of organic materials such as solar cells and LEDs hold a strong potential in this direction. They possess entirely new characteristics compared to those materials that are available today: mechanical flexibility, light weight, low costs, and semi-transparency. This opens up for radically new fields of application such as, e.g., in smart windows or wearable technology devices. The Innovation project centre RollFlex is to contribute to the use of the large market potential for sustainable energy solutions by establishing the production of flexible solar cells and LEDs in close collaboration between the Mads Clausen Institute (MCI) of University of Southern Denmark, the Kieler Nanolabor of the Christian-Albrechts-Universität (CAU), Stensborg A/S, and FUMT R&D.
