Produktionsschulen richten sich an junge Menschen unter 25 Jahren, deren berufliche Perspektive aufgrund von Bildungsdefiziten, Lernmüdigkeit sowie fehlenden Basiskompetenzen stark eingeschränkt ist. Produktionsschulen sind betriebsähnliche Bildungseinrichtungen, die junge Menschen insbesondere für den regionalen Ausbildungs- und Arbeitsmarkt in relevanten Berufsfeldern qualifizieren sollen. Dazu gehören die Förderung der Persönlichkeitsentwicklung, der beruflichen Orientierung und individuellen Berufswegeplanung, der Ausbildungsreife und Beschäftigungsfähigkeit ebenso wie die Verbesserung ausbildungsrelevanter Qualifikationen und die Unterstützung beim Übergang in Ausbildung, Beschäftigung und Weiterqualifizierung. Produktionsschulen sind keine Schulen im Sinne des Schulgesetzes. Produktionsschulen erfüllen eine didaktische und berufspädagogische Funktion, indem den Teilnehmenden fachpraktische Fähig- und Fertigkeiten, sowie die für eine schulische bzw. berufliche Integration notwendigen Sozial- und Personalkompetenzen vermittelt werden.
