Objectives: knowing the role of residential radon, tobacco use, exposure to environmental tobacco smoke in childhood and adult life, occupation (including leisure activities), diet (including alcohol consumption), and polymorphisms in susceptility genes and DNA-repairing genes in the development of small cell lung cancer (the most lethal histological type of lung cancer, with 15-20 % lung cancer). Methodology: study of multicenter cases and controls in 9 hospitals in 3 Autonomous Communities. Case: subject diagnosed with small cell lung cancer (incident cases). Control: subjects intervened by non-complex non-tobacco-related surgery. Inclusion criteria: subjects with no neoplastic history older than 30 years at the time of diagnosis or surgery. The cases will be recruited consecutively at the participating centers for 30 months. The controls will be selected in the same hospitals as the cases with a sampling by sex and age frequency. Cases and controls will be extracted 3 ml of total blood, radon will be measured at home and trained staff will interview them. Genetic polymorphisms will be determined in the National Genotyping Center and residential radon in the Radón Laboratory of Galicia. The results will be analysed with multivariate logistic regression. Sample size estimate: taking into account lung cancer mortality, the expected percentage of small cell cancer and the mortality-incidence ratio in lung cancer, and estimating case losses in 25 %, 537 cases will be recruited. The necessary controls, ratio 1:1.5 to the cases, will be 806, with a total of 1,343 participants. (English)

(Spanish)
