Cyprus has a history for more than 5,500 years in wine production with vineyards shaping the rural landscape of the island. However, wine imports to the island have gradually gained a third of the domestic market share, the value of which is estimated at 75 million euros per year. Local small and medium-sized winemaking enterprises are displaced by competition as they cannot create identity for their product. The ECO-WINERY project aims to promote eco-innovation at vineyard and winery level and gives the means to local businesses to diversify their products. ECO-WINERY creates an Aristeia ISIDA with the participation of four prestigious institutions and one SMEs, in order to identify for the first time worldwide the environmental footprint of wine, in line with very recent European policies. The main actions of ECO-WINERY are: a) the creation of a friendly and free-to-use software to determine the environmental footprint of wine; b) the investigation of good practices that will reduce the environmental footprint; and c) the creation of a protocol for the production of low environmental footprint wines to be used as a basis for the creation of a certification mark in the near future. In addition, within the framework of Eco-Winery, more than 70 professional researchers (half of them at the early stage of their research career) will be trained in innovative methods of grape and wine production, thus enhancing their prospects for their development. Networking activities with leading international organisations and businesses will accelerate the flow of information and scientific progress in the field. (English)

(Greek)
