    The concept behind the Porta Rusica project – from Polonynas to the Bieszczady Mountains refers to the historical Porta Rusica route. The Porta Rusica trade route was established in the 19th century. It is considered the oldest trade route built in Upper Hungary. It connected Michalovce and Baligród, led through Ruské, the Roztoki Pass to Roztoki. On the best preserved section, the achievements of the technological thinking progress of that time are visible (culverts, bridges, tollhouses, kilometre markers). The project aims to increase the use of the natural and cultural potential of the Polish-Slovak borderland (Lesko Poviat, Snina District). This main objective will be implemented through 3 specific objectives: creating the integrated Porta Rusica tourism product, enhancing the recognition of natural and cultural potential of the Polish-Slovak borderland and enhancing the awareness of tourists and the local population about sustainable cycle tourism. The project includes four tasks: marking the Porta Rusica route and its infrastructure, adapting the existing trails and cycleways to a sustainable “single-track route”, a series of conferences, trainings for local communities and guides as well as a series of activities promoting sustainable cycle tourism. The main results of the project are: creating the Porta Rusica cross-border tourism product covering 59.75 km of new, modernised or improved cycleways (including the “single-track” route) together with related infrastructure (educational boards, tourist shelters, observation towers). The creation of the Porta Rusica tourism product will be accompanied by: educational activities as well as activities promoting the cultural and natural heritage of the borderland: 2 conferences, 2 events, including a cycling rally, preparation of e-tools (interactive map of cycle routes, smartphone application) and a website with QR codes as well as publications promoting the borderland potential (maps, albums). The project will be implemented by a partnership of 3 institutions: 2 from Poland and 1 from Slovakia. (English)
