COMMON CHALLENGE. The GreenMind addresses issues of environment protection and sustainable use of natural resources in the transboundary Peipsi/Chudskoye Lake area, through the introduction of intensive environmental awareness and educational measures covering such topics as eutrophication, waste management, and energy efficiency. Currently, everyday human activities harmfully impact on the lake and its adjacent ecosystems, those are of utmost importance for the lives of a million people in the cross-border area, for its attractiveness for tourism, recreation and investments. The key to balance the carrying capacity of ecosystems and economic demands of people is regionally-based environmental awareness, which builds up necessary knowledge towards sustainable consumption and nature care. OVERALL OBJECTIVE is to contribute to increasing of public green minding for creation of environmentally-oriented, energy-efficient and attractive living conditions and recreation in the transboundary Peipsi/ Chudskoye region. Solving of the addressed issues will be essentially facilitated, since the project capitalizes environmental knowledge and environmental awareness practices in the Programme area, develops practical methodological tool-kits for the long-run, educates substantial number of existing and future environmental education practitioners to work with the project products, and facilitates the establishment of a wider societal context that will secure the sustainability of the project results. OUTPUTS. The fragmented environmental education and awareness initiatives, programs and materials will be capitalized in the EstRus region; a series of comprehensive and practical methodological materials will be produced for educational institutions for wide use. A draft concept of environmental education will be developed for Pskov Region and submitted as the project contribution to the Committee on Education. Main secondary schools and educational centers in Pskov Region and in 4 counties of Estonia will be informed about the project, involved into its activities, and provided with the project environmental tool-kits. Two social platforms – on Facebook and Vkontakte – will be established to secure networking, attract wider population, and enable long-term dissemination of project results. Comprehensive and motivating theoretical and practical knowledge about a sustainable way of living, exchange of good practices and innovative solutions as well as intensive training program applied in the project will contribute to urging inhabitants to adopt a more environment-friendly behavior, thus contributing to nature protection and sustainable use of nature resources. The key target groups / final beneficiaries are: educators, students, kindergarten- and schoolchildren, as well as the wider public of the region. ACTIVITIES. Nearly 20 public events and 8 environmental campaigns will be held. At least 80 educators, 40 children will be trained for multiplying knowledge for the long run. Not less than 50 students and 50 families (min.200 prns) will be involved into green minding process within 2 project contests of social eco-advertisements and “Eco-family”. Min. 50 outdoor public events'; organizers will be trained to organize eco-friendly activities and min. At least 530 Programme area residents will take personal and active part in the campaigns; hence their capacity to act nature-friendly will be reinforced; at least 1000 residents will be informed about the environmental issues raised by the project; at least 10 organizations (cafés, supermarkets, petrol stations) will join eco-campaigns and start introducing eco-friendly initiatives. APPROACH. The project implementation includes cross-sectoral, participatory, synergy approaches and compliance with national and regional regulations that will be secured by consolidation of efforts of educational and environmental experts of state, municipal, non-governmental institutions for preparation, distribution and usage of locally based educational tools and by public involvement into activities encouraging the transition to environment-friendly behavior. Cross-border approach is of need to find joint solutions for increasing environmental awareness in rational use of joint natural assets, which are cross-border in nature, i.e. they are inseparable.
