The hamlet Wengelsbach is supplied exclusively by an arsenic source. As a health protection measure, bottled water is regularly distributed to the population. The source is to be finally abandoned, but the proposed alternatives (construction of a new well, a dearening plant or a connection to another French interconnector) are not financially feasible in terms of the low number of inhabitants. In the context of cross-border cooperation, a more cost-effective solution can be considered, namely the construction of a cross-border interconnector from Schönau to Wengelsbach. This line will be laid along an existing field path, which will be implemented in the medium term in a cycle path, within the framework of the cross-border development of bicycle infrastructures. Through this project, the partners involved want to promote tap water, the protection of the water resource and cross-border services. The wide audience is mobilised by the cross-border event “Drinking Water Without Borders”. This audience is also brought together through the street furniture along the line, using a drinking water fountain for cyclists and hikers, as well as digital information boards.
