Orienteering is a relatively popular sports activity in Estonia and also in Russia. In both countries there are many different competitions and activities in the area of orienteering. Unfortunately there is very little cooperation between orienteering clubs of two countries and very few orienteers are participating in competitions and training camps across the border. There is a lot to learn from each other – how to organise and improve training camps and competitions for orienteers, how to create new and high quality orienteering maps, etc. One of the project aims is to establish a tradition of joint orienteering competitions in Russia and in Estonia. The precondition for creating such cooperation is presence of a close contact between orienteers of two countries. At the moment this bond is very weak. Our project helps to establish new contacts between active people from two countries’ during the joint training camps and joint competitions. Also in training days there will be organized a joint teaching team, which consists of two countries’ trainers. Another problem in orienteering area is shortage of new orienteering maps. Nowadays the precondition for creating quality o-maps is the digitally scanned ground material (airborne laserscanning data, obtained from airplane). These materials are very expensive and additional funding with the help of the project would be very valuable. The overall objective of this project is to improve physical activity of people, sustainability of orienteering in the area covered by the program and to activate cross-border cooperation in orienteering. This will be achieved through the jointly organized and implemented activities. The main outputs of the project will be: 1. At least two jointly organised training camps and two competitions are held. 2. New orienteering maps are created on both sides of the border. 3. Some orienteering equipment is purchased. Members of two participating orienteering club mainly benefit from the project outputs. But not only! All the participants of different orienteering activities will benefit from purchase of different equipment and creation of new orienteering maps. During the jointly organized training camps it is planned to combine two activities – training and cleaning up dumped waste from the forest. There are few places in Estonia where illegally dumped waste can be found in the forest, in Russia there are much more such sites. This is something new and original in this project. In our opinion it should become a tradition for orienteers to have forest cleanup days every year. Also guided tours in Pushkinskie Gorõ and in the city of Pskov are planned on the Russian side and a visit to the waste sorting plant on the Estonian side. (English)
