The project is a joint initiative of three Dutch and three German organizations (4 SMEs, a knowledge institute and a local authority), which together carry out implementation activities and public relations work to improve the climate impact of biogas plants. Increasing the efficiency of biogas plants on both sides of the border according to the principle of H2 injection is an essential aspect. The necessity for this arises from the increased competition for raw materials and the tightening of the remuneration system in NL and D. The principle is based on the supply of hydrogen into a fermenter. The hydrogen is produced by electrolysis with electricity from a sustainable source. The hydrogen is produced sustainably in two pilot plants (one in the Netherlands, one in Germany) and fed into the fermenter in different ways. The aim is to make biogas production more efficient through a biochemical process; this gives the gas produced a higher quality (more CH4 and less CO2) and the required biomass input per unit of biogas produced is lower. In addition to hydrogen, oxygen is also produced during electrolysis. The oxygen is also used to increase efficiency in the fermenter and in the CHP engine. On the basis of practical implementations, the project will show how this can best be done technically and organizationally in view of the different conditions in both countries. Part of the project is also the transfer to a situation where this principle is widely used in our region. Companies will be addressed and energy and economic factors will be calculated. (English)
