The overall objective of the project is to reduce the amount of landfilled biodegradable waste generated on the territory of the municipalities of Berkovitsa and Varshets through separate collection and recovery of green municipal waste. This objective is in line with the waste management hierarchy and the European and national targets for the gradual reduction of the amount of biodegradable municipal waste destined for landfilling. The project also contributes to the improvement of resource efficiency, as a result of the investment the waste will become a resource — compost. The specific objective of the project is to provide the necessary infrastructure for separate collection and recovery of green and/or biodegradable municipal waste in the municipalities.The project will build a composting plant for green and/or biodegradable waste with a capacity of 3 696 t/year, which will be located on the territory of the municipality of Berkovitsa. The composting plant built under the project will process separately collected green and/or biodegradable municipal waste from the settlements on the territory of the two municipalities and produce high quality compost. The project will also provide the necessary equipment for introducing the system for separate collection and transport to the composting plant of green bio-waste in the municipality of Berkovitsa and the municipality of Varshets. The socio-economic benefits of the project are aimed at improving the quality of the environment for the residents in both municipalities and in the Montana Waste Management Region by reducing the harmful emissions associated with landfilling; providing a new type of waste service to residents and businesses in municipalities and high quality compost. Общата цел на проекта е да се намали количеството депонирани биоразградими отпадъци, генерирани на територията на общините Берковица и Вършец, чрез разделното събиране и оползотворяване на зелените битови отпадъци. Тази цел е в съответствие с йерархията за управление на отпадъците и с европейските и националните цели за поетапно намаляване на количествата на биоразградимите битови отпадъци, предназначени за депониране. Проектът допринася и за подобряване на ресурсната ефективност, като в резултат от инвестицията отпадъкът ще се превръща в ресурс – компост.Специфичната цел на проекта е да се осигури необходимата инфраструктура за разделно събиране и оползотворяване на зелените и/или биоразградими битови отпадъци в общините.По проекта ще бъде изградена компостираща инсталация за зелени и/или биоразградими отпадъци с капацитет 3696 т/г, която ще бъде разположена на територията на община Берковица. Изградената по проекта компостираща инсталация ще преработва разделно събрани зелени и/или биоразградими битови отпадъци от населените места на територията на двете общини и ще произвежда висококачествен компост. В рамките на проекта ще бъде осигурена и необходимата техника за въвеждане на системата за разделно събиране и транспортиране до компостиращата инсталация на зелените биоотпадъци в община Берковица и община Вършец.Социално-икономическите ползи от изпълнение на проекта са насочени към подобряване на качеството на околната среда за жителите в двете общини, а и в Регион за управление на отпадъците Монтана, чрез намаляване на свързаните с депонирането на отпадъци вредни емисии; предоставяне на нов тип услуга относно отпадъците на жителите и бизнеса в общините и на висококачествен компост.
