A microarrays scan is requested for differential gene expression analysis (transcriptomics). This technique allows detecting the differential expression of thousands of genes or DNA fragments simultaneously in individuals subject to different conditions (environmental or experimental). Alteration of gene expression is an early, rapid and sensitive means of detecting the response to stress. By simultaneously analysing thousands of genes involved in different networks or metabolic pathways of the affected organism, it will be possible to identify modes of action (MOAS) specific to the different contaminants. The subsequent integration of data on concentration levels, bioaccumulation and molecular effects and at a higher level of organisation through bioinformatics will allow the attribution of biological effects and the development of new environmental risk assessment (ERAs) strategies based on the modelling and prediction of toxicities for other compounds of similar structure not studied. Thus, the aim is to reduce practical and ethical conflicts about in vivo experimentation in the future, as proposed in different European and international reports (ECETOC, OECD, US EPA). In addition, the requested equipment can be used for any differential gene expression study, such as molecular effects caused by temperature increase, pH variation or dissolved oxygen related to global change, among others.
