The Bio-Tear project consists in developing toxicity and permeability tests for topical preparations, using artificial tissue models to reduce costs and prevent testing on live animals. More specifically, research is carried out to obtain models of cornea or other anatomical structures such as mucous membranes (conjunctive, alveolar, gastric), skin or other epitheliums based on human cell cultures, that can be monitored permanently and enable pre-clinical toxicity and permeability studies to be made in pharmaceuticals. The project will also research into new permanent monitoring systems based on electro-chemical sensors and innovative systems for carrying medicaments._x000D_ In order to understand the project, it must be remembered that the only test currently recognised by the OECD to evaluate the irritability of pharmaceuticals on corneas and skin is the Draize Test, which is tested on live rabbits. The test entails very high costs and ethical problems due to the use of live animals._x000D_ Furthermore, the project will tackle the preparation of magistral formulas for eye disease not treatable by commercial products, which will undergo evaluation of toxicity and permeability according to these systems, and will speed up their transfer to clinical practices in a short space of time.
