The project aims to create of a supercluster in the northern Scandinavia. A super cluster is seen as the collaboration of multiple clusters that have a common agenda and goal. Arctic Building and Construction Competence Cluster is being developed in three distinct areas, the first is need driven research and development, the second is SME and industrial business opportunities and the third is competence and know-how. The opportunity to create the basis for a supercluster for construction industry has positive effects beyond the work performed in this project alone. One of the main advantages is the ability to attract EU-funds in the future another is new business opportunities for companies in the region. This project focuses on the third domain which is competence and know-how. Currently most of the competence is sourced from the south there is also drain of competence that is finding carriers and in more southern regions. The project will address these issues and shift the focus to a lateral sourcing of competence. By doing this shift there will be more people that will find a new employment market in Northern Finland, Northern Norway or Northern Sweden. Construction industry, although traditional, is currently a high-tech industry that requires a high level of competence from the workers involved. The target group for the project is those that are involved in the design and construction, production planning, management, SME leaders etc. It is recognized that within the region we have already a deep understanding in among other things: building in cold climate, Industrialized construction, lifecycle analysis of buildings etc. The project goal is to increase the mobility of the workforce or the mobility of the competence in the construction industry while at the same time create a roadmap towards a supercluster to sustain and continue the lateral movement of knowledge and competence over time.
