One of the main common challenges in the project area is to diversify the economic structure and to develop new products and services that are based on local raw material, local know-how and competences or – in a preferred version - the combination of both. Such sectors could be simultaneously developed at various regions across the project area and their development and post-project maintenance requires relatively little infrastructural investments. The project partners have assessed the situation from this approach and identified and as the two handicraft sector small-scale agricultural production key fields to be developed. The project main overall objective is increasing SME development and entrepreneurship by fostering cross-border business contacts and the development of services and products. The expected change brought along consists of improving the skills and knowledge of SMEs active in handicraft and small-scale agricultural production in selected sectors (timberwork and carpentry, glass art and metal works, smithery, pottery, bashing, small-scale agricultural) in the fields of production and product development), artistic design, creative and cultural industries, business management, marketing skills and network building and sustaining through organising joint relevant master-classes on both sides of the border and equipping the premises of master classes with necessary equipment. This is coupled with enhancing the possibilities for the SMEs to market and sell their products, with new marketing events / fairs infrastructure developed in project partner local authorities. The main outputs of the project are relevant investments into the infrastructure and conducting master-classes in selected areas for the SMEs in the region. The direct beneficiaries will be handicraft and small-scale agricultural focused SMEs in the region and project partner local authorities, the indirect beneficiaries will be the whole population in the region that will benefit from the invigorated socioeconomic environment and the enhanced possibilities vested therein. The main activities contributing to achieving the project and programme objectives, results and indicators include: Developing the detailed conception of master-classesConducting joint master classes for SMEs active in the handicraft sector to improve their specific skills and knowledge and in artistic design, management and marketing skills. In total 135 participants (85 RUS, 50 EST)Conducting joint master classes for SMEs active in agricultural producation to improve their skills and knowledge in management and marketing skills. In total 40 participants (36 EST, 4 RUS)Organising marketing events (e.g. fairs) in order to develop of new marketing channels for the target groups. In total 350 participants (158 EST, 192 RUS)Modernising master class and marketing facilities. The proposed approach and innovation is based on a model that on one hand invigorates the local economy through supporting the production of traditional handicraft and agriculatural products (tastes) and on the other hand uses the local authorities as enablers and promoters of such activities. Cross-border approach is needed, as the regions have historically had close cooperation, challenging similar problems and setting common goals. Similar resources have enabled to develop the same economic sectors in the past and the current economic growth with sharing similar business environment offers good opportunities for cross-border interaction and business development for people and communities- craftsmen and farmers, SME’s, self employed people etc. Cross-border cooperation is more effective and efficient for solving the challenges described above than acting on a local or national level.
