Mmmm...strawberries, tasty! Did you know that the Hoogstraten-Breda region is the top region for the production of strawberries in North-West Europe? Some 300 companies in the Flemish-Dutch border region ensure that you and I can enjoy this fresh red delicacy all year round. But that production also has a price tag. Because a lot of water is needed for this. Water that is currently not or insufficiently reused in many places. In addition, nutrients and fertilizer and crop protection products still end up unnecessarily often in drainage ditches, waterways and rivers. "That could be better", thought the researchers from the RECUPA project. They will develop a closed water circuit with decontamination techniques, with which groundwater consumption is minimized and nutrients can be optimally reused. In addition, it is expected that discharges from plant protection products can be reduced by more than 90%. Hoogstraten Test Center and Sint-Katelijne-Waver Test Station for Vegetable Growing will test and demonstrate these techniques and water systems in collaboration with Dutch partners ZLTO and Water Board Brabantse Delta and with 4 SME/SME companies from Flanders and the Netherlands. Thanks to RECUPA, we will find a strawberry on our plate in 3 years' time that has been grown particularly sustainably. It tastes even better! (English)
