The project will focus on tourism as a core development platform for ’sustainable heritage sites’. The ultimate goal is to safeguard natural and cultural heritage in remote and vulnerable areas. To do so, the project consortium proposes to work on concrete challenges identified by stakeholders in our key areas, and test tools and solutions that work not only in tourism development, but also in a more general context of sustainable development. A key innovation is to use a transnational stakeholder-focused approach to bring together currently isolated approaches to fostering and integrating regional multi-stakeholder partnerships. The preparatory project will map challenges and existing/developing solutions in each area to be included in the main project. The outcomes will be used to design a main project that will contribute to solutions that increase capacity for community-based sustainable environmental management and maximise returns on investment. These solutions will be compared and shared trans-nationally, and synthesised in a web-based toolkit that supports diverse stakeholders in working together to balance environmental, economic and social interests.
