Background Sweden has an extensive need for welltrained staff in sufficient numbers and there is a great need for workers in occupations where a skills gap currently exists. Many young people are looking for work, despite the fact that many employers are worried about their skills supply, while interest in upper secondary school vocational programmes decreases and professional choices are guided by gender norms. International experience shows that vocational competition helps to strengthen the quality of secondary vocational education and its attractiveness to learners. It also helps facilitate young peoples transition from school to work and contributes to strengthening the national supply of skills. Goal, purpose Excellence in VET (Vocational Education and Training) and its status should be raised by vocational competitions and strengthened cooperation within the labour market.
