The fundamental objective of this project is to deepen the knowledge of the molecular, biochemical and cellular mechanisms involved in the etiopathogeny of the degenerative disease of the intervertebral disc. In particular, those potentially exercised by adipokinas and neuroendocrine factors that regulate both energetic and metabolic homeostasis and modulation of the inflammatory and immunological response. The study will focus on clarifying the molecular bases of disc degeneration exerted by lipocaline-2 (LCN2/NGAL), visfatin, nesfatin-1 (NUCB2), progranulin, serpine-2, chemerin and ghrelin in human intervertebral disc cells.
