The geographical variation in mortality is the result of deep inequalities in the population, and especially in large cities. Such inequalities are often linked to socio-economic and environmental factors. This project aims to study this distribution in the Basque Country and its three capitals, addressing certain aspects that have not been undertaken to date and continuing the work of monitoring mortality undertaken by other previous editions of the MEDEA projects. As concrete objectives, we first aim to estimate these geographical patterns with novel (multivariate) disease mapping techniques. With regard to the study of the socio-economic component, we consider the development of a new deprivation index based on information from the 2011 census. The use of this census poses clear methodological and operational challenges as it is based on a sample unlike the previous census (2001). Finally, as an overall objective of the project, we will study the association between the geographical distribution of mortality and that of the socio-economic and environmental indicators worked during the project. In this last study we add as a novel element the incorporation of the evolution of socio-economic indicators to explain both the average level of mortality for the whole period and its temporal evolution in each census section.
