EL DESARROLLO DE EFECTIVOS AGENTES DE CONTROL BIOLOGICO CONTRA PLAGAS PUEDE REDUCIR NOTABLEMENTE O ELIMINAR LAS NECESIDADES DE PLAGUICIDAS QUIMICOS. POR TANTO, DICHOS AGENTES DE CONTROL DE PLAGAS SON UN OBJETIVO PRIORITARIO PARA PODER DESARROLLAR UNA ACTIVIDAD AGRARIA SOSTENIBLE ASI COMO PARA MEJORAR LA SEGURIDAD Y CALIDAD AGROALIMENTARIAS. LOS BIOINSECTICIDAS BASADOS EN BACULOVIRUS SON UN MEDIO SEGURO Y EFECTIVO PARA EL CONTROL DE MUCHAS DE PLAGAS DE LEPIDOPTEROS DE GRAN IMPORTANCIA ECONOMICA. SIN EMBARGO, LA EXCESIVA ESPECIFICIDAD DE LOS BACULOVIRUS HA LIMITADO SU COMERCIALIZACION Y UTILIZACION POR LOS AGRICULTORES._x000D_ OTROS FACTORES QUE DEBEN SER CONSIDERADOS EN EL DESARROLLO DE INSECTICIDAS BIOLOGICOS SON LOS MECANISMOS DE DEFENSA DEL INSECTO Y SUS INTERACCIONES TRI-TROFICAS CON OTROS ELEMENTOS DEL ECOSISTEMA, TALES COMO OTROS MICROORGANISMOS O LAS PLANTAS DE LAS QUE SE ALIMENTAN. ESTOS MECANISMOS DE DEFENSA SON DE DOS TIPOS: BARRERAS FISICAS Y BIOQUIMICAS QUE DIFICULTAN LA ENTRADA DEL PATOGENO Y EL SISTEMA INMUNE DEL HUESPED. EL ULTIMO, IMPLICA UNA COMBINACION DE MECANISMOS TANTO ESPECIFICOS COMO GENERALISTAS DESTINADOS A BLOQUEAR LA PROGRESION DEL VIRUS. UN ELEMENTO ESENCIAL DEL SISTEMA INMUNE ES LA RESPUESTA HUMORAL Y CELULAR IMPLICADA EN EL PROCESO DE MELANIZACION, ENCAPSULACION Y FAGOCITOSIS DEL PATOGENO. COMO RESULTADOS PREVIOS DEL GRUPO HEMOS IDENTIFICADO UNA SERIE DE FACTORES MOLECULARES QUE REGULA LA RESPUESTA DEL HUESPED A BACULOVIRUS, ASI COMO LA INTERACCION DEL INSECTO HUESPED CON OTRO MICROORGANISMOS PRESENTE EN EL ECOSISTEMA. ESTOS MECANISMOS SON SUSCEPTIBLES DE SER MANIPULADO EXTERNAMENTE PARA AUMENTAR LAS PROPIEDADES INSECTICIDAS DE BACULOVIRUS. POR EJEMPLO, HEMOS OBSERVADO QUE CIERTOS AZUCARES PUEDEN BLOQUEAR LA DEFENSA MEDIADA POR LAS LECTINAS DEL INSECTO LO QUE RESULTA EN LA MEJORA DE LA CAPACIDAD INFECCIOSA DEL VIRUS. EN OTROS ESTUDIOS TAMBIEN HEMOS IDENTIFICADO MOLECULAS DE ORIGEN NATURAL QUE INTERFIEREN CON EL SISTEMA INMUNOLOGICO DEL INSECTO. POR EJEMPLO, CIERTOS METABOLITOS DERIVADOS DE PLANTAS INHIBEN EFICAZMENTE EL PROCESO DE MELANIZACION AUMENTANDO ASI LA POTENCIA DEL INOCULO VIRAL. _x000D_ EN ESTE PROYECTO, EMPLEANDO LA ROSQUILLA VERDE, SPODOPTERA EXIGUA Y SU BACULOVIRUS COMO SISTEMA MODELO, PRETENDEMOS EXPLORAR EL USO DE METABOLITOS DE ORIGEN NATURALES, ASI COMO OTROS MICROORGANISMOS PRESENTES EN LOS ECOSISTEMAS AGRICOLAS PARA LA MEJORA DE BACULOVIRUS. LOS RESULTADOS OBTENIDOS EN ESTE SUBPROYECTO TAMBIEN SE PUEDEN COMBINAR CON NUEVOS PRODUCTOS BASADOS EN BACULOVIRUS MIXTOS DIRIGIDOS A CONTROLAR MULTIPLES PLAGA DE INSECTOS SIMULTANEAMENTE Y QUE SERAN DESARROLLADOS POR EL SUBGRUPO COLABORADOR. CONJUNTAMENTE, ESPERAMOS GENERAR MEJORES FORMULADOS A BASE DE VIRUS QUE PUEDAN REDUCIR CONSIDERABLEMENTE EL USO DE LOS INSECTICIDAS QUIMICOS Y AUMENTAR LA SOSTENIBILIDAD DE LA PRODUCCION AGRICOLA. THE DEVELOPMENT OF EFFECTIVE BIOLOGICAL PEST CONTROL AGENTS CAN SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCE OR ELIMINATE THE NEEDS FOR CHEMICAL PESTICIDES. SUCH PEST CONTROL AGENTS ARE THEREFORE A PRIORITY OBJECTIVE IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO DEVELOP A SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURAL ACTIVITY AS WELL AS TO IMPROVE AGRI-FOOD SAFETY AND QUALITY. BACULOVIRUS-BASED BIOINSECTICIDES ARE A SAFE AND EFFECTIVE MEANS OF CONTROLLING MANY OF LEPIDOPTERAN PESTS OF GREAT ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE. However, the EXCESIVE SPECIFICITY of baculoviruses has restricted their trade and use by farmers._x000D_ other FACTORS who should be considered in the development of biologistic insecticides are the defensor mechanisms of the INSECT and their TRI-trophic INTERATIONS WITH OTHER ELEMENTS of the ECOSYSTEM, as other MICROORGANISMS or PLANTS from which they feed. THESE DEFENCE MECHANISMS ARE OF TWO TYPES: PHYSICAL AND BIOCHEMICAL BARRIERS THAT HINDER THE ENTRY OF THE PATHOGEN AND THE HOST’S IMMUNE SYSTEM. THE LAST ONE INVOLVES A COMBINATION OF BOTH SPECIFIC AND GENERALIST MECHANISMS AIMED AT BLOCKING THE PROGRESSION OF THE VIRUS. AN ESSENTIAL ELEMENT OF THE IMMUNE SYSTEM IS THE HUMORAL AND CELLULAR RESPONSE INVOLVED IN THE PROCESS OF MELANISATION, ENCAPSULATION AND PHAGOCYTOSIS OF THE PATHOGEN. AS PREVIOUS RESULTS OF THE GROUP WE HAVE IDENTIFIED A NUMBER OF MOLECULAR FACTORS THAT REGULATE THE RESPONSE OF THE HOST TO BACULOVIRUS, AS WELL AS THE INTERACTION OF THE HOST INSECT WITH OTHER MICROORGANISMS PRESENT IN THE ECOSYSTEM. THESE MECHANISMS ARE SUSCEPTIBLE TO EXTERNAL MANIPULATION TO INCREASE THE INSECTICIDAL PROPERTIES OF BACULOVIRUS. FOR EXAMPLE, WE HAVE OBSERVED THAT CERTAIN SUGARS CAN BLOCK THE DEFENSE MEDIATED BY INSECT LECTINS RESULTING IN IMPROVED INFECTIOUS CAPACITY OF THE VIRUS. IN OTHER STUDIES WE HAVE ALSO IDENTIFIED MOLECULES OF NATURAL ORIGIN THAT INTERFERE WITH THE IMMUNE SYSTEM OF THE INSECT. FOR EXAMPLE, CERTAIN PLANT-DERIVED METABOLITES EFFECTIVELY INHIBIT THE MELANISATION PROCESS, THUS INCREASING THE POTENCY OF THE VIRAL INOCULUM. _x000D_ in THIS PROJECT, EMPLEANING THE GREEN ROSQUILLA, SPODOPTERA exigua AND YOUR baculovirus AS MODEL SYSTEM, we intend to explore the use of NATURAL ORIGIN METABOLITS, as well as other microorganisms present in the AGRICOLAL ECOSYSTEMS for the best of baculovirus. THE RESULTS OBTAINED IN THIS SUBPROJECT CAN ALSO BE COMBINED WITH NEW PRODUCTS BASED ON MIXED BACULOVIRUSES AIMED AT CONTROLLING MULTIPLE INSECT PESTS SIMULTANEOUSLY AND DEVELOPED BY THE COLLABORATING SUBGROUP. TOGETHER, WE HOPE TO GENERATE BETTER VIRUS-BASED FORMULATIONS THAT CAN SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCE THE USE OF CHEMICAL INSECTICIDES AND INCREASE THE SUSTAINABILITY OF AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION. (English)
