EL PROYECTO SE ENMARCA EN LA POSTCOSECHA DE CITRICOS, PRINCIPAL PRODUCTO HORTOFRUTICOLA ESPAÑOL. LAS PERDIDAS PRODUCIDAS DURANTE LA POSTCOSECHA POR ALTERACIONES PATOLOGICAS Y FISIOLOGICAS OSCILAN ENTORNO AL 20% DEL PRODUCTO MANEJADO POR CAMPAÑA, LO QUE SUPONE UNOS 200 MILLONES DE EUROS. LOS PRINCIPALES PATOGENOS CAUSANTES DE PODRIDOS EN CITRICOS SON PENICILLIUM DIGITATUM Y P. ITALICUM. TRADICIONALMENTE, ESTOS HONGOS FITOPATOGENOS SE HAN CONTROLADO MEDIANTE EL EMPLEO DE FUNGICIDAS, AUNQUE LA PREOCUPACION CRECIENTE DE LOS CONSUMIDORES POR PROBLEMAS RELACIONADOS CON LA SALUD O LA CONTAMINACION AMBIENTAL Y LA EXIGENCIA DE LOS MERCADOS DEMANDANTES DE PRODUCTOS HORTOFRUTICOLAS ¿RESIDUOS CERO¿, LOS PROBLEMAS DERIVADOS DE LA ELIMINACION DE LOS RESIDUOS GENERADOS Y LA APARICION DE CEPAS RESISTENTES HAN IMPULSADO LA BUSQUEDA DE TRATAMIENTOS ALTERNATIVOS, BIEN SEA BIOLOGICOS, QUIMICOS O FISICOS. SIN EMBARGO, NO EXISTE UN TRATAMIENTO EFICAZ QUE SUSTITUYA A LOS FUNGICIDAS COMERCIALES. ADEMAS, LAS CONDICIONES REQUERIDAS PARA QUE ALGUNOS DE ESTOS TRATAMIENTOS SEAN EFICACES PUEDEN INDUCIR ALTERACIONES FISIOLOGICAS YA QUE LOS FRUTOS NO TOLERAN LAS DOSIS O CONDICIONES NECESARIAS PARA EL CONTROL DE PODRIDOS. TODO ESTO EVIDENCIA LA NECESIDAD DE SEGUIR INVESTIGANDO LOS MECANISMOS IMPLICADOS EN LA INDUCCION DE RESISTENCIA EN EL FRUTO FRENTE A PATOGENOS. TRABAJOS ANTERIORES DE NUESTRO GRUPO EVIDENCIAN EL POTENCIAL DE LA LUZ AZUL GENERADA POR DIODOS EMISORES DE LUZ (LEDS) POTENCIANDO RESPUESTAS DE DEFENSA FRENTE A PATOGENOS EN FRUTOS CITRICOS Y QUE INTENSIDADES DE LUZ AZUL SUPERIORES AFECTAN A LA VIABILIDAD DE DICHOS PATOGENOS. SIN EMBARGO, EL MODO DE ACCION DE LA LUZ AZUL ES PRACTICAMENTE DESCONOCIDO Y NO SE HAN DETERMINADO LAS CONDICIONES OPTIMAS DEL TRATAMIENTO PARA UTILIZARLO EN LA INDUSTRIA. LA HIPOTESIS DE PARTIDA DEL PROYECTO ES QUE LA UTILIZACION DE TECNOLOGIAS EMERGENTES NO CONTAMINANTES DE BAJO COSTE COMO LA LUZ AZUL LED PUEDE SER EFICIENTE REDUCIENDO LA INCIDENCIA DE ALTERACIONES PATOLOGICAS SIN PRODUCIR FISIOPATIAS DURANTE LA POSTCOSECHA DE LOS FRUTOS CITRICOS. POR TANTO, ESTA TECNOLOGIA PODRIA SER UTILIZADA POR LA INDUSTRIA PARA REDUCIR LA APLICACION DE PRODUCTOS QUIMICOS Y ASI SU INGESTA POR PARTE DEL CONSUMIDOR, LA GENERACION DE RESIDUOS Y VERTIDOS O CONTAMINACIONES AL MEDIO AMBIENTE. EL OBJETIVO PRINCIPAL DEL PROYECTO ES PROFUNDIZAR EN EL CONOCIMIENTO DEL EFECTO Y MODO DE ACCION DE LA LUZ AZUL LED EN LA INCIDENCIA DE PODRIDOS CAUSADOS POR P.DIGITATUM MEDIANTE LA UTILIZACION DE HERRAMIENTAS OMICAS Y DETERMINAR SI LOS TRATAMIENTOS CON LEDS QUE REDUCEN LOS PODRIDOS CAUSADOS POR ESTE HONGO, POR CEPAS RESISTENTES A FUNGICIDAS, O POR P. ITALICUM INCIDEN EN LA SUSCEPTIBILIDAD DE LOS FRUTOS A DESARROLLAR DAÑOS EN LA PIEL, COLOR O EN LA CALIDAD INTERNA DEL FRUTO. LOS OBJETIVOS CONCRETOS DEL PROYECTO SON: 1) OPTIMIZAR LA APLICACION DE LA LUZ AZUL LED TENIENDO EN CUENTA LAS NECESIDADES DE LA INDUSTRIA Y SITUACIONES POSTCOSECHA QUE FAVOREZCAN LA INCIDENCIA DE ALTERACIONES PATOLOGICAS EN LOS FRUTOS CITRICOS Y 2) CONOCER EFECTO Y MODO DE ACCION DE LA LUZ AZUL GENERADA POR LEDS, PROFUNDIZANDO EN LOS CAMBIOS QUE PRODUCE EN EL TRANSCRIPTOMA Y EN EL METABOLISMO DE FENILPROPANOIDES. LOS RESULTADOS OBTENIDOS ABRIRIAN NUEVAS ALTERNATIVAS DE CONTROL NO CONTAMINANTES, QUE VA A COMENZAR A TESTAR LA INDUSTRIA EN ESTE PROYECTO, QUE REDUZCAN PERDIDAS DE ALIMENTOS DURANTE LA POSTCOSECHA MINIMIZANDO LA UTILIZACION DE COMPUESTOS QUIMICOS NO SALUDABLES. THE PROJECT IS PART OF THE POST-HARVEST OF CITRICOS, THE MAIN SPANISH HORTOFRUTICOLA PRODUCT. LOSS DURING POST-HARVEST DUE TO PATHOLOGICAL AND PHYSIOLOGICAL ALTERATIONS OSCILLATES AROUND 20 % OF THE PRODUCT HANDLED PER CAMPAIGN, WHICH IS ABOUT 200 MILLION EUROS. THE MAIN PATHOGENS CAUSING ROTTING IN CITRICS ARE PENICILLIUM DIGITATUM AND P. ITALICUM. TRADITIONALLY, THESE PHYTOPATOGEN FUNGI HAVE BEEN CONTROLLED BY THE USE OF FUNGICIDES, ALTHOUGH THE GROWING CONCERN OF CONSUMERS ABOUT HEALTH PROBLEMS OR ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION AND THE DEMAND OF THE DEMANDING MARKETS FOR FRUIT AND VEGETABLE PRODUCTS ZERO WASTE, THE PROBLEMS ARISING FROM THE ELIMINATION OF WASTE GENERATED AND THE APPEARANCE OF RESISTANT STRAINS HAVE LED TO THE SEARCH FOR ALTERNATIVE TREATMENTS, WHETHER BIOLOGICAL, CHEMICAL OR PHYSICAL. HOWEVER, THERE IS NO EFFECTIVE TREATMENT TO REPLACE COMMERCIAL FUNGICIDES. IN ADDITION, THE CONDITIONS REQUIRED FOR SOME OF THESE TREATMENTS TO BE EFFECTIVE MAY INDUCE PHYSIOLOGICAL ALTERATIONS SINCE THE FRUITS DO NOT TOLERATE THE DOSES OR CONDITIONS NECESSARY FOR THE CONTROL OF ROTTENNESS. ALL THIS DEMONSTRATES THE NEED TO CONTINUE INVESTIGATING THE MECHANISMS INVOLVED IN INDUCING RESISTANCE IN THE FRUIT AGAINST PATHOGENS. PREVIOUS WORKS OF OUR GROUP SHOW THE POTENTIAL OF BLUE LIGHT GENERATED BY LIGHT EMITTING DIODES (LEDS) ENHANCING DEFENSE RESPONSES AGAINST PATHOGENS IN CITRIC FRUITS AND THAT HIGHER BLUE LIGHT INTENSITIES AFFECT THE VIABILITY OF THESE PATHOGENS. HOWEVER, THE MODE OF ACTION OF BLUE LIGHT IS PRACTICALLY UNKNOWN AND OPTIMAL TREATMENT CONDITIONS FOR USE IN INDUSTRY HAVE NOT BEEN DETERMINED. THE STARTING HYPOTHESIS OF THE PROJECT IS THAT THE USE OF LOW-COST NON-POLLUTING EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES SUCH AS BLUE LED LIGHT CAN BE EFFICIENT REDUCING THE INCIDENCE OF PATHOLOGICAL ALTERATIONS WITHOUT PRODUCING PATHOPHYSIOSIS DURING THE POST-HARVEST OF CITRUS FRUITS. THEREFORE, THIS TECHNOLOGY COULD BE USED BY INDUSTRY TO REDUCE THE APPLICATION OF CHEMICAL PRODUCTS AND THUS THEIR CONSUMPTION BY THE CONSUMER, THE GENERATION OF WASTE AND DUMPING OR POLLUTION TO THE ENVIRONMENT. THE MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT IS TO DEEPEN THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE EFFECT AND MODE OF ACTION OF THE BLUE LED LIGHT IN THE INCIDENCE OF ROTS CAUSED BY P.DIGITATUM THROUGH THE USE OF OMIC TOOLS AND TO DETERMINE WHETHER THE TREATMENTS WITH LEDS THAT REDUCE THE ROTS CAUSED BY THIS FUNGUS, BY STRAINS RESISTANT TO FUNGICIDES, OR BY P. ITALICUM AFFECT THE SUSCEPTIBILITY OF THE FRUITS TO DEVELOP DAMAGE TO THE SKIN, COLOR OR THE INTERNAL QUALITY OF THE FRUIT. THE SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT ARE: 1) OPTIMISE THE APPLICATION OF THE BLUE LED LIGHT TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE NEEDS OF THE INDUSTRY AND POST-HARVEST SITUATIONS THAT FAVOR THE INCIDENCE OF PATHOLOGICAL ALTERATIONS IN THE CITRUS FRUITS AND 2) KNOW THE EFFECT AND MODE OF ACTION OF THE BLUE LIGHT GENERATED BY LEDS, DEEPENING THE CHANGES IT PRODUCES IN THE TRANSCRIPTOME AND IN THE METABOLISM OF PHENYLPROPANOIDS. THE RESULTS OBTAINED WILL OPEN NEW NON-POLLUTING CONTROL ALTERNATIVES, WHICH WILL BEGIN TO TEST THE INDUSTRY IN THIS PROJECT, REDUCING FOOD LOSSES DURING POST-HARVEST, MINIMISING THE USE OF UNHEALTHY CHEMICAL COMPOUNDS.
