EL DESARROLLO DE MANOS ARTIFICIALES EFICIENTES, TANTO PARA SU USO EN ROBOTS COMO PARA LA SUSTITUCION PROTESICA SIGUE SIENDO UN COMPLEJO RETO PARA LA INGENIERIA DE DISEÑO Y CONTROL. EN EL PASADO SE HAN USADO HERRAMIENTAS DE SIMULACION PARA EVALUAR LA FUNCIONALIDAD DE GARRAS ROBOTICAS Y MANOS ANTROPOMORFAS Y DEFINIR METRICAS DE AGARRE, DE CARA A LA PLANIFICACION AUTOMATICA DEL MOVIMIENTO. SIN EMBARGO ESTAS HERRAMIENTAS DE SIMULACION SON LIMITADAS PARA CONSIDERAR LA FUNCIONALIDAD REAL DE LOS DISEÑOS DE MANO EN ACTIVIDADES DE LA VIDA DIARIA, YA QUE ASPECTOS COMO LA FRICCION, DEFORMACION, RIGIDEZ DE LAS ARTICULACIONES, RESPUESTA DINAMICA DE LOS ACTUADORES O DEL SISTEMAS DE CONTROL, SON DIFICILES DE INCORPORAR A METRICAS ANALITICAS. LA EVALUACION EXPERIMENTAL DE PROTOTIPOS DE MANOS ARTIFICIALES ES POR TANTO IMPRESCINDIBLE PARA AVANZAR HACIA SOLUCIONES MAS EFICIENTES. DEL ANALISIS DE LA LITERATURA Y DE LOS DESARROLLOS PREVIOS DEL EQUIPO INVESTIGADOR, SE CONSTATA LA NECESIDAD DE DISPONER DE EQUIPOS, PROTOCOLOS Y METRICAS ESTANDARIZADOS QUE PERMITAN EVALUAR EXHAUSTIVAMENTE DE FORMA EXPERIMENTAL DIFERENTES PROTOTIPOS DE MANOS ARTIFICIALES, SEAN ESTAS ROBOTICAS O PROTESICAS Y OBTENER METRICAS O INDICES DE CALIDAD EN COMPARACION A LA MANO HUMANA. EN ESTE PROYECTO SE PARTE DE LA HIPOTESIS DE QUE ESTA EVALUACION EXPERIMENTAL DEBE DESACOPLARSE PARA ANALIZAR DE FORMA SEPARADA LOS TRES PRINCIPALES FACTORES QUE AFECTAN A LA FUNCIONALIDAD DE UNA MANO ARTIFICIAL: 1) EL DISEÑO MECANICO DE LA MISMA (TOPOLOGIA, MATERIALES) QUE CONDICIONA LAS POSTURAS DE AGARRE ESTABLE ALCANZABLES 2) LAS PRESTACIONES DINAMICAS DE SUS ACTUADORES O MOTORES Y SISTEMAS DE TRANSMISION MECANICA, QUE CONDICIONAN LAS PRESTACIONES DINAMICAS COMO FUERZAS AGARRE O TIEMPOS DE APERTURA/CIERRE 3) EL SISTEMA DE CONTROL DE LA MANO, QUE CONDICIONA LA PROPIOCEPCION, SENSIBILIDAD, RAPIDEZ DE RESPUESTA O VERSATILIDAD PARA DIFERENTES TAREAS. ASIMISMO, SE PARTE DE LA HIPOTESIS DE QUE LAS METRICAS EXPERIMENTALES QUE PERMITAN EVALUAR LOS PROTOTIPOS DE MANO SEGUN ESTOS TRES FACTORES DEBEN BASARSE EN LA COMPARACION CON LAS PRESTACIONES DE LA MANO HUMANA. POR TANTO, EL PROYECTO SE PLANTEA TRES OBJETIVOS: 1) DESARROLLAR EQUIPOS Y PROTOCOLOS DE ENSAYO (BENCHMARKS) QUE PERMITAN EVALUAR EXPERIMENTALMENTE CUALQUIER MANO ARTIFICIAL Y COMPARARLA CON LA MANO HUMANA MEDIANTE METRICAS DEFINIDAS EN LOS TRES NIVELES CITADOS (DISEÑO MECANICO, ACTUACION, CONTROL). 2) OBTENER UN DISEÑO MEJORADO DE UNA MANO ROBOTICA PARA APLICACIONES DE SERVICIO, UTILIZANDO LAS METODOLOGIAS DESARROLLADAS EN EL OBJETIVO 1 EN SUS TRES NIVELES. 3) OBTENER UN DISEÑO MEJORADO DE UNA PROTESIS DE MANO TRANSRADIAL MOTORIZADA DE BAJO COSTE, EMPLEANDO LAS METODOLOGIAS DESARROLLADAS EN EL OBJETIVO 1 EN SUS TRES NIVELES. THE DEVELOPMENT OF EFFICIENT ARTIFICIAL HANDS, BOTH FOR USE IN ROBOTS AND FOR PROSTHETIC REPLACEMENTS, REMAINS A COMPLEX CHALLENGE FOR DESIGN AND CONTROL ENGINEERING. IN THE PAST, SIMULATION TOOLS HAVE BEEN USED TO EVALUATE THE FUNCTIONALITY OF ROBOTIC GRIPPERS AND ANTHROPOMORPHIC HANDS AND TO DEFINE GRASPING METRICS FOR MOTION PLANNING. HOWEVER, THESE SIMULATION TOOLS ARE LIMITED TO CONSIDER THE ACTUAL FUNCTIONALITY OF HAND DESIGNS IN DAILY LIFE ACTIVITIES, SINCE ASPECTS AS THE FRICTION, THE DEFORMATION, THE JOINTS STIFFNESS OR THE DYNAMIC RESPONSE OF ACTUATORS OR THE CONTROL SYSTEM, ARE DIFFICULT TO INCORPORATE INTO ANALYTICAL METRICS. THEREFORE, THE EXPERIMENTAL EVALUATION OF PROTOTYPES OF ARTIFICIAL HANDS IS ESSENTIAL TO MOVE TOWARDS MORE EFFICIENT SOLUTIONS. FROM THE ANALYSIS OF THE LITERATURE AND FROM THE PREVIOUS DEVELOPMENTS OF THE RESEARCH TEAM, IS DEDUCED THE NEED FOR STANDARDIZED EQUIPMENT, PROTOCOLS AND METRICS THAT PERMIT THE EXPERIMENTAL EVALUATION OF DIFFERENT PROTOTYPES OF ARTIFICIAL HANDS, WHETHER THEY ARE ROBOTIC OR PROSTHETIC HANDS, AND THE DEFINITION OF QUALITY METRICS OR INDICES COMPARED TO THE HUMAN HAND. IN THIS PROJECT IT IS ASSUMED THAT THIS EXPERIMENTAL EVALUATION MUST BE STRUCTURED TO ANALYSE SEPARATELY THE THREE MAIN FACTORS THAT AFFECT THE FUNCTIONALITY OF AN ARTIFICIAL HAND: 1) THE MECHANICAL DESIGN (TOPOLOGY, MATERIALS) THAT AFFECT TO THE ATTAINABLE STABLE GRIP POSTURES 2) THE DYNAMIC PERFORMANCE OF THEIR ACTUATORS AND MECHANICAL TRANSMISSION, WHICH CONDITION THE DYNAMIC RESPONSE AS GRASP FORCES AND OPENING / CLOSING TIMES 3) THE CONTROL SYSTEM, AFFECTING TO THE PROPRIOCEPTION, SENSITIVITY, RESPONSIVENESS OR VERSATILITY FOR DIFFERENT TASKS. IT IS ALSO ASSUMED THAT THE EXPERIMENTAL METRICS THAT ALLOW EVALUATING HAND PROTOTYPES ACCORDING TO THESE THREE FACTORS MUST BE BASED ON THE COMPARISON WITH THE PERFORMANCE OF THE HUMAN HAND. THEREFORE, THE PROJECT HAS THREE MAIN OBJECTIVES: 1) TO DEVELOP TEST EQUIPMENT AND PROTOCOLS (BENCHMARKS) THAT ALLOW FOR THE EXPERIMENTAL EVALUATION OF ANY ARTIFICIAL HAND COMPARED TO THE HUMAN HAND, USING METRICS DEFINED AT THE THREE LEVELS ABOVE-MENTIONED (MECHANICAL DESIGN, ACTUATORS PERFORMANCE, CONTROL SYSTEM). 2) OBTAIN AN IMPROVED DESIGN OF A ROBOTIC HAND FOR SERVICE APPLICATIONS, USING THE METHODOLOGIES DEVELOPED IN OBJECTIVE 1 AT ITS THREE LEVELS. 3) OBTAIN AN IMPROVED DESIGN OF A LOW-COST MOTORIZED TRANSRADIAL HAND PROSTHESIS, USING THE METHODOLOGIES DEVELOPED IN OBJECTIVE 1 AT ITS THREE LEVELS.
