    LAS ACTIVIDADES ANTROPICAS HAN LLEVADO A LOS ECOSISTEMAS A UN ESTADO DE DEGRADACION SIN PRECEDENTES. TAL ES EL CASO DE LAS ZONAS COSTERAS, ESPECIALMENTE LAS DOMINADAS POR PRADERAS DE MACROFITOS. LA PERDIDA DE FUNCIONES Y SERVICIOS ECOSISTEMICOS QUE PROVOCA SU DEGRADACION REPERCUTE ESPECIALMENTE SOBRE LAS POBLACIONES COSTERAS. ENTRE LOS SERVICIOS QUE MAS RELEVANCIA HAN COBRADO EN LA ULTIMA DECADA DESTACA LA CAPACIDAD DE ESTOS ECOSISTEMAS DE INCORPORAR DIOXIDO DE CARBONO (CO2) Y RETIRARLO (ENTERRARLO) A LARGO PLAZO DE LA ATMOSFERA, LO QUE AYUDARIA A CONTRARRESTAR EL ACTUAL INCREMENTO DE CO2 ATMOSFERICO COMO PRINCIPAL CAUSANTE DEL CAMBIO CLIMATICO. LA MERMA, INCLUSO DESAPARICION, DE ESTAS PRADERAS DE MACROFITOS A NIVEL GLOBAL, NO SOLO PODRIA AFECTAR NEGATIVAMENTE A LA CAPACIDAD DE FIJACION Y RETIRADA DE CO2 A LARGO PLAZO, SINO QUE PODRIA PROVOCAR LA LIBERACION DEL QUE PERMANECE ACTUALMENTE SECUESTRADO EN LOS SEDIMENTOS. EN ESTE ESCENARIO, Y DESDE UNA PERSPECTIVA INTEGRADA, PAVAROTTI ESTUDIARA LA RESPUESTA DE LOS ECOSISTEMAS DOMINADOS POR MACROFITOS MARINOS (ANGIOSPERMAS Y RIZOFITOS) FRENTE A ALGUNAS DE LAS PRINCIPALES AMENAZAS GLOBALES QUE LOS ACECHAN. ESTA PERSPECTIVA SE FUNDAMENTA EN QUE LA RESPUESTA DE ESTOS SISTEMAS FRENTE A LAS VARIABLES AMBIENTALES ESTA LEJOS DE SER SIMPLE E INDIVIDUAL, Y EL COMPORTAMIENTO FINAL DEBE INTEGRAR LAS RESPUESTAS DE CADA UNO DE LOS COMPONENTES DEL ECOSISTEMA. POR LO TANTO, PAVAROTTI ESTUDIARA LA RESPUESTA INTEGRADA (A TRAVES DEL METABOLISMO Y FLUJOS DE CARBONO ORGANICO DISUELTO, COD) DE LAS PRINCIPALES COMUNIDADES BENTONICAS DE FONDOS BLANDOS DE LA BAHIA DE CADIZ (PRADERAS DE ANGIOSPERMAS MARINAS, LECHOS DE ALGAS RIZOFITAS Y SEDIMENTO SIN VEGETACION) FRENTE A DIFERENTES VARIABLES CONTROLADORAS RELACIONADAS CON EL CAMBIO CLIMATICO Y CON LA EUTROFIZACION (INCREMENTO EN TEMPERATURA Y VELOCIDAD DEL FLUJO, REDUCCION EN LOS NIVELES DE LUZ, INCREMENTO EN NUTRIENTES) Y COMO ALGUNAS CARACTERISTICAS DE LAS PRADERAS (P.E. DENSIDAD HACES, COMPLEJIDAD DEL ENTRAMADO RADICULAR-RIZOMATICO) PUEDEN AFECTAR A LA RESPUESTA. EN PAVAROTTI TAMBIEN SE PRESTARA ATENCION ESPECIAL A LA DIVULGACION Y DIFUSION DE LOS RESULTADOS, NO SOLO A TRAVES DE LAS VIAS CIENTIFICAS USUALES, SINO TAMBIEN A LOS GESTORES, A LOS USUARIOS FINALES DE ESTOS ECOSISTEMAS Y A LA POBLACION EN GENERAL A TRAVES DE JORNADAS DIVULGATIVAS, ACTIVIDADES DE DIFUSION Y ELABORACION DE MATERIALES ADAPTADOS Y ESPECIFICOS PARA CADA UNO DE ESTOS SECTORES.     ANTHROPOGENIC ACTIVITIES HAVE LED TO AN UNPRECEDENTED WORLDWIDE DEGRADATION IN MANY ECOSYSTEMS. THIS IS THE CASE FOR VEGETATED COASTAL AREAS, PARTICULARLY THOSE DOMINATED BY MACROPHYTE MEADOWS. BECAUSE OF SUCH DEGRADATION, COASTAL INHABITANTS ARE AFFECTED BY THE LOSS OF THE FUNCTIONS AND ECOSYSTEM SERVICES THEY PROVIDE. THE CAPACITY OF THESE ECOSYSTEMS TO TAKE UP ATMOSPHERIC CARBON (CO2) AND TO SEQUESTER IT INTO THE SEDIMENT FOR LONG PERIODS IS CURRENTLY ONE OF THE MOST RELEVANT ECOSYSTEM SERVICES, BECAUSE THIS WOULD CONTRIBUTE TO REDUCE ATMOSPHERIC CO2 LEVELS, A MAIN DRIVER OF CLIMATE CHANGE. THE ONGOING DEGRADATION, EVEN THE LOSS OF MACROPHYTE MEADOWS WORLDWIDE, COULD DRAIN THE CAPACITY OF THESE ECOSYSTEMS TO TAKE UP ATMOSPHERIC CO2 AND TO STORE IT INTO THE SEDIMENTS, BUT WILL ALSO FOSTER THE RELEASE OF THE CARBON PREVIOUSLY BURIED BY SUCH MEADOWS. ON THIS SCENARIO, AND FROM AN INTEGRATED APPROACH, PAVAROTTI WILL FOCUS ON THE RESPONSE OF THE MACROPHYTE-DOMINATED AREAS (SEAGRASSES AND RHIZOPHYTES) TO SOME OF THE MAIN THREATS THAT ARE CURRENTLY ACTING WORLDWIDE. THIS APPROACH IS CHOSEN BECAUSE THE RESPONSE OF THESE ECOSYSTEMS IN FACING ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGES IS FAR FROM BEING INDIVIDUAL, AND ITS BEHAVIOUR MUST TAKE INTO ACCOUNT RESPONSES OF EVERY COMPONENT OF THE ECOSYSTEM. THUS, PAVAROTTI WILL FOCUSS ON THE INTEGRATED RESPONSE (BY MEASURING COMMUNITY METABOLISM AND DISSOLVED ORGANIC CARBON [DOC] FLUXES) OF THE MAIN BENTHIC COMMUNITIES INHABITING SOFT BOTTOMS AT CADIZ BAY (SEAGRASS AND RHIZOPHYTE MEADOWS AND UNVEGETATED SEDIMENTS) TO SELECTED CONTROL VARIABLES RELATED TO CLIMATE CHAGE AND EUTROPHICATION (TEMPERATURE, NUTRIENTS AND CURRENT FLOW INCREASES AND DETERIORATION IN LIGHT ENVIRONMENT), AND HOW THE RESPONSE CAN BE AFFECTED BY SOME MEADOW ATTRITUTES (SHOOT DENSITY, BELOWGROUND NETWORK COMPLEXITY). PAVAROTTI WILL ALSO STRENGTH THE DISSEMINATION OF RESULTS THROUGHOUT THE USUAL SCIENTIFIC MEANS, BUT ALSO TO MANAGERS, LOCAL END-USERS OF COASTAL ECOSYSTEMS AND GENERAL PUBLIC BY DESIGNING SPECIAL ISSUES AND TASKS (WORKSHOPS, MEETINGS, BOOKLETS, LEAFLETS, ETC.).
