EN LA ACTUALIDAD ESTAMOS PRESENCIANDO PERDIDAS DE BIODIVERSIDAD ALARMANTES, CAUSADAS POR DISTINTOS FACTORES DE ORIGEN ANTROPICO, SIENDO LOS ECOSISTEMAS DE AGUA DULCE UNO DE LOS MAS AFECTADOS DEL PLANETA. LA PERDIDA DE BIODIVERSIDAD NO SOLO ES PREOCUPANTE EN SI MISMA, SINO QUE AFECTA AL FUNCIONAMIENTO DE LOS ECOSISTEMAS Y A LA PROVISION DE SERVICIOS Y RECURSOS AL SER HUMANO (P.EJ., AGUA DE BUENA CALIDAD). LA EXPANSION DE LAS ENFERMEDADES EMERGENTES ES UN FACTOR IMPORTANTE DE CAMBIO GLOBAL (AGRAVADO POR EL CAMBIO CLIMATICO) QUE ESTA PRODUCIENDO EXTINCIONES MASIVAS EN DISTINTOS GRUPOS DE ORGANISMOS ASOCIADOS A LOS ECOSISTEMAS DE AGUA DULCE. EN ESTE PROYECTO EXAMINAMOS COMO LA PERDIDA DE ESPECIES DE DOS DE ESTOS GRUPOS (PLANTAS RIPARIAS Y ANFIBIOS) AFECTA AL FUNCIONAMIENTO DE RIOS DE CABECERA Y HUMEDALES DE MONTAÑA, RESPECTIVAMENTE. ESTABLECEMOS ESCENARIOS FUTUROS DE PERDIDA DE ESPECIES CAUSADOS POR LA EXPANSION DE HONGOS PATOGENOS DE LOS GENEROS PHYTOPHTHORA Y BATRACHOQUITRIUM. MEDIANTE DISTINTAS APROXIMACIONES EXPERIMENTALES TESTAMOS VARIAS HIPOTESIS SOBRE CAMBIOS EN PROCESOS ECOLOGICOS QUE SON CLAVE PARA LA PROVISION DE SERVICIOS DEL ECOSISTEMA Y EL USO DE LOS RECURSOS HIDRICOS. NUESTROS OBJETIVOS SE ADECUAN ASI AL QUINTO RETO DE LA SOCIEDAD PLANTEADO EN EL PLAN ESTATAL DE INVESTIGACION CIENTIFICA Y TECNICA Y DE INNOVACION, CUYO OBJETIVO ES LA ACCION SOBRE EL CAMBIO CLIMATICO Y LA EFICIENCIA EN EL USO DE LOS RECURSOS Y MATERIAS PRIMAS. THE CURRENT RATES OF BIODIVERSITY LOSS ARE ALARMING AND CAUSED BY DIFFERENT ANTHROPOGENIC FACTORS. FRESHWATER ECOSYSTEMS ARE AMONG THE MOST AFFECTED ON EARTH. THE LOSS OF BIODIVERSITY IS OF CONCERN DUE TO ITS INTRINSIC VALUE, BUT ALSO BECAUSE IT CAN AFFECT THE FUNCTIONING OF ECOSYSTEMS AND THE SERVICES AND RESOURCES THEY PROVIDE TO HUMANS (E.G., GOOD-QUALITY WATER). THE EXPANSION OF EMERGING DISEASES IS A MAIN FACTOR ASSOCIATED TO GLOBAL CHANGE (INTENSIFIED BY CLIMATE CHANGE), WHICH IS PRODUCING MASSIVE EXTINCTIONS OF DIFFERENT ORGANISMS THAT ARE FUNDAMENTAL FOR FRESHWATER ECOSYSTEMS. IN THIS PROJECT WE EXAMINE HOW SPECIES LOSS IN TWO GROUPS OF SUCH ORGANISMS (RIPARIAN PLANTS AND AMPHIBIANS) ALTERS THE FUNCTIONING OF HEADWATER STREAMS AND MOUNTAIN WETLANDS, RESPECTIVELY. WE ESTABLISH FUTURE SCENARIOS OF SPECIES LOSS CAUSED BY THE EXPANSION OF PATHOGENIC FUNGI OF THE GENERA PHYTOPHTHORA AND BATRACHOQUITRIUM. USING DIFFERENT EXPERIMENTAL APPROACHES WE TEST SEVERAL HYPOTHESES ABOUT CHANGES IN ECOLOGICAL PROCESSES WHICH ARE KEY FOR THE PROVISION OF ECOSYSTEM SERVICES AND THE USE OF WATER RESOURCES. OUR OBJECTIVES THUS FIT THE FIFTH CHALLENGE OF SOCIETY, WHICH IS PART OF THE SPANISH STATE PLAN FOR SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNICAL RESEARCH AND INNOVATION, AND FOCUSES ON ACTION AGAINST CLIMATE CHANGE AND EFFICIENCY IN RESOURCE USE.
