LA PRODUCCION DE ACIDO FOSFORICO (H3PO4) POR LA INDUSTRIA FERTILIZANTE GENERA ENORMES VOLUMENES DE FOSFOYES (PG), UN RESIDUO PELIGROSO DEBIDO A SU ELEVADO CONTENIDO EN METALES, METALOIDES Y RADIONUCLIDOS. EL ALMACENAMIENTO DEFINITIVO COMO OPCION DE GESTION SUPONE UNA GRAN EXTERNALIDAD NEGATIVA A LA INDUSTRIA FERTILIZANTE, POR LOS COSTES ECONOMICOS TAN ALTOS QUE SUPONEN. POR LO TANTO, SE NECESITAN MEDIDAS MAS SOSTENIBLES EN LA GESTION DE ESTE RESIDUO. ACTUALMENTE SOLO SE RECICLA UN 15% DEL PG GENERADO A NIVEL MUNDIAL, PRINCIPALMENTE COMO MATERIAL DE CONSTRUCCION. SIN EMBARGO, ESTOS RESIDUOS PUEDEN CONTENER CONCENTRACIONES SIGNIFICATIVAS DE ELEMENTOS DE INTERES ECONOMICO CUYA RECUPERACION AYUDEN A SUFRAGAR LOS GASTOS DE GESTION Y MINIMIZAR EL VOLUMEN GENERADO. EN ESTE SENTIDO, ESTOS RESIDUOS PRESENTAN UNA ELEVADA CONCENTRACION DE MATERIAS PRIMAS CRITICAS, POR EJEMPLO, EN EL DEPOSITO DE PG DE HUELVA (100 MT) SE ESTIMAN QUE EXISTEN CONTENIDAS 30400 T DE B, 28000 T DE TIERRAS RARAS (REE), 1800 T DE U, 1400 T DE CR, 1300 T DE V, ETC.. ENTRE ELLOS, LAS TIERRAS RARAS E ITRIO (REY) TIENEN UN GRAN INTERES ECONOMICO POR SU APLICACION EN PRODUCTOS TECNOLOGICOS._x000D_ _x000D_ EL PRINCIPAL OBJETIVO DE ESTE TRABAJO ES TRANSFORMAR UN RESIDUO PELIGROSO EN UNA FUENTE SECUNDARIA DE REY. PARA ABORDAR ESTE OBJETIVO, SE REALIZARA UN ENFOQUE INNOVADOR Y TRANSVERSAL BASADO EN ANALISIS QUIMICOS Y MINERALOGICOS MEDIANTE TECNICAS DE RADIACION SINCROTRON, METODOS HIDROMETALURGICOS OPTIMIZADOS MEDIANTE INFORMACION QUIMICA Y MINERALOGICA DE ALTA RESOLUCION, METODOS OPTIMIZADOS DE BIOLIXIVIACION Y TECNICAS SELECTIVAS DE CONCENTRACION Y SEPARACION DE REY. THE PRODUCTION OF PHOSPHORIC ACID (H3PO4) BY FERTILIZER INDUSTRY GENERATES HUGE AMOUNTS OF PHOSPHOGYPSUM (PG), OF ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERN WORLDWIDE DUE TO THE HIGH CONTENT IN METALS, METALLOIDS AND RADIONUCLIDES CONTAINED. INDEFINITE STACKING IMPOSES A NEGATIVE EXTERNALITY ON THE PHOSPHATE INDUSTRY BECAUSE IT CONSTITUTES DISPROPORTIONATELY COSTS, THUS THE ADOPTION OF MORE SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS TO THE MANAGEMENT OF THESE WASTES IS REQUIRED. NOWADAYS, ONLY AROUND 15% OF THE WORLDWIDE PRODUCTION IS ESTIMATED TO BE RECYCLED, MAINLY AS RAW MATERIAL IN BUILDING. HOWEVER, THESE WASTES COULD ALSO CONTAIN HIGH CONCENTRATIONS OF ELEMENTS OF ECONOMIC INTEREST WHOSE RECOVERY COULD HELP OFFSET TREATMENT COSTS. PARTICULARLY RELEVANT IT WOULD BE THE PRESENCE OF CRITICAL RAW MATERIALS (CRM), THOSE OF HIGH ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE AND AT RISK OF SUPPLY FOR EUROPEAN COUNTRIES. IN THE CASE OF THE HUELVA PG DEPOSIT (SW SPAIN), AROUND 30400 T OF B, 28000 T OF RARE EARTH ELEMENTS (REE), 1800 T OF U, 1400 T OF CR, 1300 T OF V AND LESSER AMOUNTS OF OTHER ELEMENTS OF ECONOMIC INTEREST (E.G. CU, NI, SC AND GA) ARE ENCLOSED IN THESE WASTES. AMONG THEM, THE RARE EARTH ELEMENTS AND YTTRIUM (REY) HAS A GREAT ECONOMIC IMPACT DUE TO THEIR USE IN TECHNOLOGICAL APPLICATIONS. _x000D_ _x000D_ THE MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THIS PROJECT IS TO TRANSFORM A HAZARDOUS WASTE INTO A SECONDARY SOURCE OF REY. TO ADDRESS THIS GOAL, A A TRANSVERSAL AND INNOVATIVE APPROACH BASED ON HIGH-RESOLUTION MINERALOGICAL ANALYSIS, OPTIMIZED CHEMICAL AND BIOLEACHING EXTRACTION METHODS AND NOVEL CONCENTRATION AND SEPARATION REY METHODS. FIVE DIFFERENT HYPOTHESIS ARE FACED IN THIS PROJECT:_x000D_ _x000D_ 1. FLUORIDE (INSTEAD OF PHOSPHATE) IS THE MAIN MINERAL CONTROLLING REY CONCENTRATION IN PG:_x000D_ _x000D_ PREVIOUS STUDIES HAVE SUGGESTED THAT GYPSUM IS NOT THE MINERAL HOST FOR REE. TO ADDRESS THIS ISSUE, PROPOSALS TO BEAMLINES WORKING ON µXRD COUPLED WITH µXRF (I.E. ALBA AND ELETTRA RADIATION FACILITIES) WILL BE SUBMITTED. _x000D_ _x000D_ 2. IT IS POSSIBLE TO ELABORATE OPTIMIZED REY CHEMICAL LEACHING PROCEDURES FROM PG BASED ON HIGH-RESOLUTION MINERALOGICAL EVIDENCES._x000D_ _x000D_ PREVIOUS RESULTS EVIDENCED THAT THE REY EXTRACTION FROM PG IS DRIVEN BY ACIDITY. OPTIMIZED EXTRACTION METHODS OF REY BASED ON MINERALOGICAL EVIDENCES WILL BE DEVELOPED DURING THE PROJECT._x000D_ _x000D_ 3. IT IS POSSIBLE TO ELABORATE A BIOLEACHING PROCEDURE TO EXTRACT REY FROM PG._x000D_ _x000D_ TO OUR KNOWLEDGE, BIOLEACHING OF PG TO EXTRACT REY HAS NOT BEEN EXPLORED TO DATE, THIS PROJECT WILL DEVELOP THE OPTIMAL CONDITIONS FOR MICROORGANISMS TO EXTRACT REY FROM PG IN LIAISON WITH COLLABORATORS FROM THE ECOLE POLYTECHNIQUE FEDERALE DE LAUSANNE (EPFL) SPECIALIZED IN MICROBIOLOGY._x000D_ _x000D_ 4. IT IS POSSIBLE TO DEVELOP OPTIMIZED CONCENTRATION AND SELECTIVE SEPARATION TECHNIQUES TO OBTAIN A MARKETABLE REY CONCENTRATE._x000D_ _x000D_ ONCE DISSOLVED, REY MUST BE SEPARATED FROM THE REST OF IMPURITIES AND CONCENTRATED IN A PRODUCT OF COMMERCIAL INTEREST. TO ADDRESS THIS ISSUE WE WILL TEST NOVEL SELECTIVE EXTRACTANTS DEVELOPED BY THE LABORATORY OF ION SEPARATION USING SELF-ASSEMBLED MOLECULAR SYSTEMS AT INSTITUTE OF SEPARATIVE CHEMISTRY OF MARCOULE (FRANCE) TO EXTRACT SELECTIVELY REY._x000D_ _x000D_ 5. IT IS POSSIBLE TO DEVELOP ENVIRONMENTALLY-FRIENDLY CHEMICAL AND BIOLOGICAL-BASED METHODS OF REY RECOVERY FROM PG _x000D_ _x000D_ IT IS NECESSARY TO ASSESS THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS ASSOCIATED TO SUCH PROCESSES AND COMPARE THEM TO THOSE GENERATED IN THE DIFFERENT MANAGEMENT OPTIONS FOR THESE WASTES.
