EN ESTE PROYECTO DETERMINAREMOS LAS CONCENTRACIONES DE LOS ANTIBIOTICOS DE USO HUMANO MAS UTILIZADOS EN GALICIA, ESPAÑA Y LA UE, EN LODOS Y EFLUENTES DE EDAR, LODOS TRATADOS POR GESTORES DE RESIDUOS, Y EN SUELOS ENMENDADOS CON LODOS Y CULTIVOS. DEL MISMO MODO, SE UTILIZARAN EXPERIMENTOS EN CAMARAS DE FLUJO AGITADO PARA LAS CINETICAS MAS RAPIDAS. SE REALIZARAN EXPERIMENTOS EN COLUMNA PARA ESTUDIAR LA MOVILIDAD Y EL TRANSPORTE DE ANTIBIOTICOS EN SUELOS Y LODOS._x000D_ EL SUBPROYECTO 1 CUENTA CON INVESTIGADORES CON EXPERIENCIA Y MEDIOS PARA LLEVAR A CABO TODAS LAS TAREAS PROGRAMADAS._x000D_ CONSIDERAMOS QUE EL PROYECTO PROPUESTO ES DE GRAN RELEVANCIA, NO SOLO A NIVEL CIENTIFICO, SINO TAMBIEN A NIVEL SOCIAL, AMBIENTAL Y DE SALUD PUBLICA, Y MERECE UN ESTUDIO EN PROFUNDIDAD COMO EL QUE SE PLANTEA.     HUMAN MEDICINE ANTIBIOTICS ARE WIDELY USED, BUT AN IMPORTANT PROPORTION IS EXCRETED TO WASTEWATER. TREATMENTS CARRIED OUT IN TREATMENT PLANTS (WWTP) ARE NOT ABLE TO ELIMINATE ANTIBIOTICS, GENERATING SLUDGE WHERE THEY ACCUMULATE. ALSO, TREATMENTS APPLIED TO SLUDGES ARE NOT HOMOGENEOUS. MOST SLUDGE IS SPREAD ON SOILS, WITH PUBLIC HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENTAL RIKS LINKED TO ANTIBIOTICS._x000D_ GALICIA PRODUCES 110,000 T OF SEWAGE SLUDGE ANNUALLY, AND 87% END UP IN CROP SOILS. HOWEVER, THERE IS A LACK OF DATA ON ANTIBIOTICS IN SLUDGES, SOILS AND ENVIRONMENTAL SAMPLES. IN THIS PROJECT WE WILL DETERMINE CONCENTRATIONS OF THE HUMAN MEDICINE ANTIBIOTICS MOST USED IN GALICIA, SPAIN, AND THE EU, IN WWTP SLUDGE AND EFFLUENTS, IN SLUDGE TREATED BY WASTE MANAGERS, AND IN SLUDGE-AMENDED SOILS AND CROPS. ONCE ON SOILS, IT IS OF MAIN IMPORTANCE TO ANALYZE DEGRADATION PROCESS AFFECTING THESE POLLUTANTS, THEIR EFFECTS ON SOIL MICROBIAL COMMUNITIES, ADOSORPTION/DESORPTION AND OVERALL SOIL DYNAMICS, INDIVIDUALLY AND IN THE PRESENCE OF OTHER ANTIBIOTICS AND POLLUTANTS._x000D_ AT A LATER STAGE, MITIGATION ALTERNATIVES AGAINST THEIR NEGATIVE ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS WILL BE STUDIED, AS THE BIOADSORBENT CAPACITY OF DIFFERENT BY-PRODUCTS ABUNDANT IN GALICIA (PINE BARK, WOOD ASH, MUSSEL SHELL), IN ORDER TO RETAIN/REMOVE ANTIBIOTICS AND MINIMIZE THEIR NEGATIVE EFFECTS ON MICROBIAL COMMUNITIES, CROPS, AND WATERS._x000D_ TO REACH THESE AIMS WE WILL DETERMINE:_x000D_ A)CONCENTRATIONS OF THE HUMAN MEDICINE ANTIBIOTICS AMOXICILLIN, (FROM THE GROUP OF PENICILLINS) AZITHROMYCIN (MACROLIDES), CEFUROXIME (CEPHALOSPORINS), LEVOFLOXACIN (QUINOLONES), CIPROFLOXACIN (QUINOLONES), CLARITHROMYCIN (MACROLIDES), AND TRIMETROPRIM (DIAMINOPYRIMIDINES), IN WWTP SLUDGE AND EFFLUENTS FROM 10 CITIES IN GALICIA, WHERE DIFFERENT TREATMENTS ARE USED._x000D_ B)CONCENTRATIONS OF THESE ANTIBIOTICS IN SLUDGE TREATED BY TWO WASTE MANAGERS WORKING WITH MOST WWTP IN GALICIA, TO DETERMINE THE EFFICACY OF THEIR TREATMENTS._x000D_ C)ANTIBIOTICS CONCENTRATIONS IN SLUDGE-AMENDED (AND CONTROL) SOILS AND CROPS (CORN AND VINEYARD)._x000D_ D)ADSORPTION KINETICS, ADSORPTION/DESORPTION PROCESSES, MOBILITY AND TRANSPORT OF 6 ANTIBIOTICS (FROM 6 GROUPS), INDIVIDUALLY AND IN COMPETITION WITH EACH OTHER AND WITH CU AND AS, BOTH IN SOILS AND IN BIOADSORBENTS, AND IN SOILS AMENDED WITH BIOADSORBENTS._x000D_ E)FIELD TRIALS IN CORN AND VINEYARD PLOTS, TO TEST MAIN ASPECTS OF ALTERNATIVES TO THE TREATMENT OF WWTP SLUDGE CURRENTLY USED BY WASTE MANAGERS, WHICH COULD FACILITATE THE RECYCLING OF WASTES ABUNDANT IN GALICIA, BY MIXING WITH SLUDGE._x000D_ STANDARDIZED TECHNIQUES AND PROCEDURES WILL BE USED FOR SAMPLING, TRANSPORTATION, STORAGE, PRETREATMENT AND DETERMINATION OF EACH OF THE ANTIBIOTICS AND ADDITIONAL PARAMETERS._x000D_ LABORATORY BATCH-TYPE EXPERIMENTS WILL BE CARRIED OUT TO STUDY ANTIBIOTICS ADSORPTION/DESORPTION IN SOILS, BIOADSORBENTS, AND MIXTURES SOIL+BIOADSORBENTS, FOR INDIVIDUAL ANTIBIOTICS AND IN COMPETITIVE EXPERIMENTS AMONG THEM AND WITH CU AND AS. LIKEWISE, STIRRED FLOW CHAMBERS WILL BE USED FOR THE FASTEST KINETICS. COLUMN EXPERIMENTS WILL BE PERFORMED TO STUDY THE MOBILITY AND TRANSPORT OF ANTIBIOTICS IN SOILS AND SLUDGES._x000D_ SUBPROJECT 1 HAS RESEARCHERS WITH EXPERIENCE AND MEANS TO CARRY OUT ALL PROGRAMMED TASKS._x000D_ WE CONSIDER THAT THE PROPOSED PROJEC IS OF GREAT RELEVANCE, NOT ONLY AT A SCIENTIFIC LEVEL BUT ALSO AT SOCIAL, ENVIRONMENTAL AND PUBLIC HEALTH LEVELS, FOR WHICH IT DESERVES AN IN-DEPTH STUDY, SUCH AS THE ONE INTENDED TO BE ADDRESSED.
