UNA DE LAS POSIBLES ALTERNATIVAS PARA LA CONSECUCION DE ESTE OBJETIVO CONSISTE EN UTILIZAR MATERIA PRIMAS RENOVABLES Y/O RESIDUOS CONTAMINANTES PARA LA OBTENCION DE PRODUCTOS Y COMBUSTIBLES QUE HASTA AHORA, EN LA MAYORIA DE LOS CASOS, SON PRODUCIDOS EN INDUSTRIAS PETROQUIMICAS Y A PARTIR DE DERIVADOS DEL PETROLEO. EN ESTE PROYECTO SE CONSIDERA LA VALORIZACION DE VARIOS RESIDUOS (POR EJEMPLO RESIDUOS AGROALIMENTARIOS, LODOS URBANOS) PARA LA PRODUCCION DE ALCOHOLES SUPERIORES, ACIDOS ORGANICOS Y BIOPLASTICOS (PHA)._x000D_ POR UN LADO ESTOS RESIDUOS PUEDEN SER GASIFICADOS PARA OBTENER GAS DE SINTESIS QUE PUEDE SER FERMENTADO PARA BACTERIAS ANAEROBIAS CAPACES DE PRODUCIR ETANOL Y ALCOHOLES SUPERIORES (BUTANOL, HEXANOL) POR UN LADO, Y/O ACIDOS ORGANICOS POR OTRO LADO. SE OPTIMIZARA EL PROCESO DE FERMENTACION TANTO EN DISCONTINUO (BATCH) COMO EN DISTINTOS BIORREACTORES CONTINUOS, BAJO DISTINTAS CONDICIONES DE OPERACION Y CON VARIAS CEPAS BACTERIANAS, PARA LA PRODUCCION O DE ALCOHOLES O DE ACIDOS ORGANICOS. ASI MISMO, ESTOS RESIDUOS PUEDEN SER FERMENTADOS DIRECTAMENTE PARA LA PRODUCCION DE BIOPOLIMEROS (BIOPLASTICOS) EN BIORREACTORES, MEDIANTE UN PROCESO DE BIOCONVERSION ACIDOGENICA PARA LA PRODUCCION DE ACIDOS ORGANICOS (AL IGUAL QUE EN EL PROCESO DE FERMENTACION DE GASES), EN UNA PRIMERA ETAPA, SEGUIDO DE UNA FERMENTACION AEROBIA CONTINUA PARA LA ACUMULACION INTRACELULAR DE BIOPOLIMEROS. DE LA MISMA MANERA, LOS ACIDOS ORGANICOS OBTENIDOS DE LA FERMENTACION DE GASES SE UTILIZARAN TAMBIEN PARA SU BIOCONVERSION EN BIOPOLIMEROS. (Spanish)

    ONE OF THE MAIN CHALLENGES OF MODERN, INDUSTRIALIZED, SOCIETIES IS TO REDUCE ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION AND TO BETTER USE AVAILABLE RESOURCES, IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE A SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT. ONE OF THE POSSIBLE ALTERNATIVES FOR REACHING THIS GOAL CONSISTS IN USING RENEWABLE RAW MATERIALS AND/OR POLLUTING WASTES IN ORDER TO OBTAIN PRODUCTS AND FUELS OF COMMERCIAL VALUE THAT ARE, SO FAR, PRODUCED FROM CRUDE OIL IN PETROCHEMICAL INDUSTRIES. IN THIS PROJECT, THE VALORIZATION OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF WASTES ARE CONSIDERED (E.G., AGRO-INDUSTRIAL WASTES, URBAN SLUDGE) FOR THE PRODUCTION OF HIGHER ALCOHOLS, ORGANIC ACIDS AND BIOPLASTICS (PHA)._x000D_ ON ONE HAND THESE WASTES CAN BE GASIFIED TO OBTAIN SYNTHESIS GAS (SYNGAS) THAT CAN BE FERMENTED BY ANAEROBIC BACTERIA CAPABLE OF PRODUCING ETHANOL AND HIGHER ALCOHOLS FROM SUCH GASES (BUTANOL, HEXANOL, MAINLY). THE FERMENTATION PROCESS WILL BE OPTIMIZED IN BOTH BATCH AND DIFFERENT CONTINUOUS BIOREACTORS UNDER DIFFERENT OPERATING CONDITIONS AND WITH VARIOUS BACTERIAL STRAINS, FOR THE PRODUCTION OF ALCOHOLS AND ORGANIC ACIDS. BESIDES, THOSE WASTES CAN BE DIRECTLY FERMENTED FOR THE PRODUCTION OF BIOPOLYMERS (BIOPLASTICS) IN BIOREACTORS, USING AN ACIDOGENIC FERMENTATION PROCESS FOR OBTAINING ORGANIC ACIDS (SIMILARLY AS IN THE GAS FERMENTATION PROCESS), IN A FIRST STAGE , FOLLOWED BY CONTINUOUS AEROBIC FERMENTATION OF THOSE ACIDS FOR THE INTRACELLULAR ACCUMULATION OF BIOPOLYMERS. ORGANIC ACIDS FROM THE GAS FERMENTATION PROCESS WIL BE USED IN A SIMILAR WAY, FOR THE PRODUCTION OF BIOPOLYMERS. (English)
