For the overall description of the project, please refer to the German or Dutch language descriptions. Information added on 2020-05-18, regarding the mitigation of the effects of COVID-19 (the coronavirus pandemic that started in 2019) (English language only): The currently urgently needed face shields are usually made from petroleum-based plastics. But there is a more environmentally friendly alternative: the protective shields can also be made from biopolymers. The 3N Competence Center Lower Saxony Network for Renewable Resources and Bioeconomy in Werlte is currently working on this. 3N's core business is the development of natural fiber reinforced composites. 3N operates a 3D printing technology center together with the project partner IST-Ficotex in the climate center Werlte. These research capacities are now being used to produce face shields made of biopolymer material that can be given free of charge to nursing homes, assistants and medical practices in the region. The current activity is the result of existing research and development work in the cross-border project "Bio-Ökonomie – Grüne Chemie". (English)
