The project aims to create a cross-border thematic trail dubbed “Following the traces of Austria-Hungary” as the restoration of the trail known as Józefinka, which starts in Stropkov and runs through the Slovak side and passes the pilgrimage site of Buková hôrka and the villages: Gribov, Kožuchovce, Miroľa, Bodrudžal, Krajná Poľaná and Nižný Komárnik, and then on the Polish side it leads through Barwinek, Dukla, Korczyna, Strzyżów and ends in Rzeszów (the route of the present national road (DK) no. 19 and the European route no. E371). The project partners map out the natural start and end of the trail which is now a natural communication channel defined by transport connections – roads, linking architectural sites scattered along the trail, which constitute the traces of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The thematic common basis of the trail is the cultural heritage of Polish-Slovak borderland from the Austro-Hungarian period, which is especially related to the presence of armies in this territory. The historical buildings left in the PL-SK borderland region: garrisons, warehouses, tenement houses, public buildings, constitute a unique cultural heritage, which is also a historical testimony of the Habsburg dynasty’s glory days. To strengthen the impact of the project and to restore the residents’ memory and elements of common identity, in the framework of the planned activities soft cross-border activities the following will be organised: common workshops, exhibitions and festivals, focusing on the main idea of the trail. To show the historical and contemporary image of the cities, IT tools such as a mobile application and a city game will be used, which, by introducing an element of innovation (smart communication channels), will form a bridge between tradition/history and modernity. The applications will present the transformation of the image and architectural development of the cities over the years from the glory of the Austro-Hungarian Empire to its collapse – the outbreak of World War I to the present day.
